Duties
This position is duty stationed at Redwood National Park in Orick, California in the Resource Management and Science (RMS) Division. The incumbent will be responsible for leading and managing a broad suite of programs related to the physical resources of the park and have responsibility in the following areas:
- Water quality compliance monitoring from ongoing park restoration projects, and long-term monitoring and geomorphic studies of sediment movement within Redwood Creek.
- Design, development, funding, contracting, and implementation of restoration projects to restore degraded park aquatic watershed conditions
- Serve as primary park lead for assessing the potential impact of climate change and sea level rise on park resources.
- Provide substantive review and comment of park operations, plans, compliance, and consultation documents related to the park's physical environment.
- Monitor and comment on timber harvests, county cannabis permits, and developments in the upper Redwood Creek basin that can potentially derogate downstream park aquatic resources.
- Educate, interpret, and provide information on physical resources to visitors and staff.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS for a Physical Scientist, GS-1301: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in physical science, engineering or mathematics that includes 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

A combination of education and experience that included course work
equivalent to a major (i.e., 24 semester hours) in physical sciences and/or a related engineering science; plus, appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of the combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of this position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four-year course of study with a major as described above.

To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes performing duties for the protection, restoration, and management of physical resources in park areas or similar operations. This involves experience in writing sections of management plans or monitoring reports, implementing long-term monitoring of physical or abiotic resources, collecting and conducting analysis of standard data, and making recommendation to higher graded staff.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree from an accredited college or university in physical science, physics, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of completed graduate education
beyond the first year by 18 (or 27 for quarter hours). Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.

To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes performing duties for the protection, restoration, monitoring, and management of abiotic resources in park areas or similar operations in the specific areas of geology, soils, hydrology, air quality, climate, and/or geomorphology. This involves experience in writing major portions of management plans, developing and implementing long-term monitoring protocols, preparing specific action plans to protect and manage physical or abiotic resources, collaborating or coordinating actions with others to provide broad strategies for abiotic resource protection, preparing requests for proposals, and managing budgets.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least least three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in physical science, physics, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. When combining specialized experience and graduate education, only units in excess of the first two years (36 semester hours) may be used to meet the educational requirement.
