Job Summary
Assists and supports pharmacists to provide experienced pharmaceutical care to patients of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Duties and Responsibilities
- In accordance with established procedures, prepares drugs and medications based on prescriptions, selecting the pharmaceutical or accessory from stock and count, pour, calculate, reconstitute, compound, package and label the product as required. Prepare and date intravenous fluids, ointments, capsules, liquids, and other preparations. Answer phone and assists clients and staff in courteous manner.
- Assist with maintaining pharmaceutical inventory to ensure adequate and fresh supplies in the Medication Dispensary and automated dispensing machines throughout the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
- Check expiration dates at regular intervals and dispose of outdated inventory appropriately and according to established internal procedures and state and federal regulations.
- Check inventory levels against target supply levels to determine items that need ordered.
- Ensure that medication storage adheres to the manufacturer’s recommend conditions such as temperature and humidity levels.
- Cycle count, replenish stock and verify controlled substance waste records for automated dispensing machines.
- Compound sterile and non-sterile dosage forms in accordance with USP standards and Medication Dispensary SOPs.
- Assist in the training of veterinary residents and interns, veterinary (DVM) students, veterinary technician students, pharmacy (PharmD) students, and veterinary technicians on Medication Dispensary procedures, state and federal regulations and required recordkeeping. Provide training for the Cubex system.
- Recognize the normal range of medications and initiate necessary corrective action.
- Assist with the management of stock and supplies. This includes, but is not limited to, physically stocking products in the Medication Dispensary as they arrive and removing expired product.
- Accept payments where applicable and add ward stock charges to service accounts as required.
- Package and prepare medications and supplies for mailing.
- Maintain cleanliness of Medication Dispensary area and equipment.
- File, label and organize Medication Dispensary documents and products as directed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Persons allergic to animal dander, hay, or straw may experience discomfort due to the location within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. This position includes working at counters, tables, and shelving. Position involves moving 5-gallon carboy containers that may weigh up to 50 pounds to stock shelves and move supplies to the counter for delivery persons needing them. Handles glassware and medications stored in glass.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the State of Illinois.
- Any one of the following that equals six (6) months:
- Successful completion of a formal training program in technical, non-professional pharmaceutical procedures and practices.
OR - Work experience in technical, non-professional pharmaceutical procedures and practices.
- One (1) year (12 months) of work experience as a pharmacy technician.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of or ability to learn pharmaceutical classification of drugs and dosage ranges as it relates to veterinary medicine.
- Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations relating to pharmacy operations, specifically regarding controlled substances.
- Knowledge of rules governing shipment of biological products.
- Knowledge of hospital pharmaceutical protocols.
- Knowledge of processes and procedures for maintaining inventory, including knowledge of medication supply sources (ordering, storage, etc.)
- Skill in calculating and preparing pharmaceuticals or parenterals
- Ability to multi-task and excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Computer and data entry skills.
Appointment Information:
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4059 - Pharmacy Technician II position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible upon conclusion of the search process. Salary is commensurate with experience.
