As an Assistant Grower, you will train to grow horticultural specialty products and crops such as plugs, bedding and ornamental plants under our Production Team. As a part of the Production team, your goal is to produce the highest quality of plants and assure that a quality product is delivered to our customers. Working hand in hand with our Growers, you will water and apply fertilizers or other chemicals to plants in order to ensure the maximum quality product is delivered to our customers. Additionally, Assistant Growers are responsible for maintaining equipment, cleaning, and assisting other ranges or departments as needed. Experience in Spanish or working within a greenhouse environment, related industry, or equivalent education is preferred but not required.
Experience in the following areas is highly preferred, but training is available for:
- Moisture management for specific crops.
- Disease awareness- Foliar and Roots
- How to mix Feeds and Chemicals.
- Insect life Cycles, Identification and Detection
An ideal candidate has the ability to identify problems in a timely manner, gathers and analyzes the information, collaborates with other Production team members to resolve issues or develop alternative solutions, and continuously seeks out learning opportunities to improve their knowledge of Tagawa practices and procedures while sharing their expertise with others. Because our Production Team has both English and Spanish Speakers, an ideal candidate would have skills in both languages or possess the communication and interpersonal skills to ensure the completion of objectives while maintaining a positive work environment.
. Requirements:Job Specific Requirements:
- Water and care for challenging crops.
- Follow work schedules for crop culture, climate, and market conditions and maximize labor efficiencies through measuring and monitoring.
- Monitor plant nutrition. Inspect plants periodically to ascertain nutrient deficiencies, detect insect/disease/pest infestations, identify foreign plant growth, and train under Growers and the Production Manager to assess and resolve situations to maintain quality product.
- Mix and apply fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides to plants as instructed by Growers and the Production Manager and maintain records of all chemical applications.
- Assist in maintaining production records. Report all issues or anomalies to the Grower Supervisor
- Perform soil tests, collect data, and report to Grower or Production Manager.
- Maintain greenhouse environment – observe that all equipment (including fans, pads, vents, heat, etc.) are operating correctly
- Maintain equipment – check for proper operation of injectors, booms, and sprayers.
- Assist in light maintenance of greenhouse equipment as needed
- Cleaning, disinfecting, and weeding as directed
- Assist in other ranges or departments as needed
As an Assistant Grower, you will also assist in training irrigators and other general greenhouse staff as directed by the Production Manager. In addition to the above responsibilities, Assistant Growers will be required to assist with various projects around the greenhouse as needed. At times, it would be expected to assist with greenhouse labor as instructed by the Production Manager.
Basic Minimum Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age and eligible to work in the United States
- Candidates must have at least 1 year of experience in irrigation, watering/spraying crops, and/or working in a greenhouse or similar environment caring for live plants.
- Applicants must have a High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent industry experience or training. Additional experience, specifically those with college degrees related to the horticulture industry, may be reflected in wage or compensation.
- Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Additionally, Assistant Grower will be asked to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Must be able to work in all Greenhouse conditions including wet, humid, dusty, dirty, and extreme hot/cold temperatures.
- Must be able to lift or move up to 25lbs, and push/pull racks on wheels of 50lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Job requires employees to be on their feet for long periods of time, sit, climb, balance, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch or crawl with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock. To prevent injury, employees must abide by the safety procedures set by Tagawa Greenhouse Ent., LLC. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
