Job Summary
The Laboratory Manager supervises the overall performance of the cannabis testing laboratory. The Laboratory Manager performs and oversees the laboratory testing department to provide data for clients. The Laboratory Manager performs at a high degree of professional excellence including but not limited to sound independent judgment, reliability, initiative, flexibility, and interpersonal relationships and communications.
The Laboratory Manager is required to conform to acceptable professional standards of conduct as defined by the practice leadership.
The Laboratory Manager requires minimal or no direct supervision and provides direction and guidance to other laboratory personnel. The Laboratory Manager will fulfill the duties of the MMCP defined Laboratory Manager role.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Is accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic support.
- Provides day-to-day supervision of laboratory operations performing high complexity testing.
- Monitors test analysis and clients to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
- Fulfills responsibilities as delegated by the Laboratory Director. These may include:
- Resolving technical problems and ensuring corrective actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from laboratory’s established performance specification
- Ensuring client test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been take and the test system is functioning properly
- Provide orientation to all testing personnel
- Evaluating and document the performance of all testing personnel as required.
- Participates in developing/writing new procedures and revising old ones.
- Makes judgments concerning results and takes appropriate actions to maintain accuracy and precision with respect to quality control data.
- Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodologies, test specificity, test sensitivity, and factors that can influence test results.
- Assists in development of new procedures in regard to personnel, space, method comparison, cost analyses, and establishment of reference intervals.
- Performs various chemical procedures with client samples using analytical equipment.
- Performs quality control procedures according to established protocol.
- Performs remedial actions and records all quality control failures and corrective actions according to established protocol.
- Verifies all assays are in control before releasing client results.
- Performs and logs instrument maintenance according to established protocol.
- Perform calibration of instruments as necessary and ensure calibration period is adequate to cover testing.
- Calculates results according to established protocol.
- Prepares laboratory reports for staff review.
- Follows established protocols for analysis, quality, and ancillary procedures.
- Maintains good inventory and notifies the appropriate person when inventory is low.
- Judges acceptability of samples and rejects/requests new samples as indicated.
- Answers telephone and assists with client questions as necessary.
- Prioritizes work effectively.
- Processes requests and investigates complaints through to resolution from clients. Reports all complaints to the Laboratory Director.
- Demonstrates troubleshooting skills.
- Participates in internal and external continuing education when required.
- May be required to conduct laboratory in-services.
- Participates in new employee orientation and training as required.
- Participates in method validation for new procedures and/or equipment.
- Participates in developing/writing new procedures and revising old ones.
- Maintains a clean work area.
- Adheres to laboratory safety practices.
- Cooperates and effectively communicates with laboratory and other personnel.
- Makes judgments concerning results and takes appropriate actions to maintain accuracy and precision of quality control data.
- Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodologies, test specificity, test sensitivity, and factors that can influence test results.
- Develops new and revises existing policies and procedures, as needed.
- Participates in Proficiency Testing, if involved in routine sample testing.
Qualifications
- At least five years’ experience in a QA/QC, clinical, toxicology, or analytical chemistry lab.
- A Master’s Degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, or related field is required.
- Ability to read and comprehend English and comprehend and follow oral and/or written instructions.
- Good communication skills in both written and oral form.
- Reasoning skills to apply principles to draw valid conclusions, interpret technical instructions, and etc.
- Advanced math skills to set limits, understand and use CV’s and SD’s.
- Abstract thinking to drive development.
- Ability to handle high stress levels due to working conditions and possible irregular hours.
- Ability to recognize potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, bodily secretions, and/or hazardous chemicals in the workplace.
- Must be able to demonstrate the technical skills for routine testing in area of assignment within three months of hiring.

Direct Reporting
· Reports to the Laboratory Director.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $70,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
