We are seeking a talented, self-motivated, curious, and creative Scientist who loves plants and has a strong background in plant science with focus in plant genetics, molecular biology and biochemistry to join our hempresearch program in Gervais, OR.
The successful candidate will have a MSc or PhD degree in plant science such as Horticulture, Agronomy, Seed Science, Plant Biology, Genetics, or a related discipline with at least 3 years’ experience. In this role, the Scientist will champion projects, working hands-on with a multifunctional team to lead the hemp plant science activities at the Gervais, Oregon Field Research Station. The successful candidate will work in a fast pace, collaborative team environment with other research scientists, third party collaborators, marketing and sales associates.
What you’ll do in this role:
Oversee and perform greenhouse hemp plant production including planting, propagation, environmental monitoring, pest control, applications, watering, feeding, and general maintenance.
Execute field research trials including preparing, planting, maintenance, harvesting, processing, phenotyping and data collection tasks.
Organize and maintain adequate records and documentation.
Be an intellectual driver to research goals and strategic discussions.
Lead in experimental design and troubleshooting efforts.
Analyze, summarize and present key research results to company leaders (Managers, Directors, VPs, etc.)
Prepare and execute project timelines. Track progress from design to the implementation of deliverables.
Build and maintain a network of external university and industry research partners.
Work occasional weekends in the greenhouse or field.
What you’ll need to be successful:
Strong scientific background in plant science with a solid knowledge in plant physiology, genetics and biochemistry.
Experience with greenhouse and field production of specialty crops or ornamentals is a plus
Proficiency in experimental design and statistical data analysis.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills and teamwork; commitment to one team mentality.
Ability to present information effectively to a diverse audience.
High energy, inquisitive individual who can multi-task and adapt in a fast-paced research environment.
Creativity and demonstrated ability to initiate and execute research projects.
Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate and work effectively on cross functional teams.
Working experience or understanding of hemp/cannabis agricultural practices is a plus but not required.

The Category and Government Affairs Analyst position is designed to support the government affairs team with data analysis, research, planning and coordination. The position will utilize data and strong analytics to make strategic recommendations on policy, enabling support for the category team and drive data utilization and optimization in support of the company business strategy.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Support the development of the state and local government affairs program.
Monitor legislative and regulatory developments on key indoor agriculture and cannabis related public policy issues at the state and local level.
Research the impacts of public policy issues on Hawthorne's business and prepare reports, talking points, and other support materials as necessary.
Assist with the development of external and internal communications to support the government affairs mission.
Attend hearings, briefings and other external meetings as necessary.
Ongoing product analysis support - understand the why behind data and who it connects with policy.
Support creation and presentation of reports on trends, behaviors, product engagement, and performance.
Identify key levers in the business and support goal-setting process for policy by uncovering trends.
Collaborate with sourcing, marketing and operations teams to conduct in-depth quantitative analyses that guide strategic decisions.
Establish rapport with other departments; build effective relationships, and share wins and successes.
Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiencies, proactively question existing processes and procedures, and implement change to gain efficiencies.

Job Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, and/or two to five years related experience.
Experience in policy development and government affairs work
Ability to travel 25%- 50%
Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills.

Good interpersonal and communication skills.
