Position Overview
A critical aspect of DCPS’ strategy is an investment in people, in all stages of their development. DCPS endeavors to get, grow, and keep its top talent, ensuring all school-based staff have opportunities for development. More specifically, the Office of Leadership Development works across teams and in schools to build the capacity and influence needed to develop and nurture leaders who are committed to equity and antiracist work in service of students and their families. Utilizing career ladders and pipelines as anchor structures, the Office provides development for leaders within their roles as well as for those who are aspiring to their next level of work.
- The Talent Acquisition and Retention division is responsible for the recruitment, selection, and retention efforts for educational aides, related service providers, instructional coaches, and teachers. This work includes nationwide recruitment to ensure that DCPS has excellent educators who are able to serve the diverse needs of our students.
- The School Leader Recruitment, Selection, and Development division ensures DCPS schools are led by outstanding principals and assistant principals through robust recruitment efforts to inspire rising talent to pursue their next opportunity.
- The RISE division executes upon a $30 Million TSL grant in support of DCPS’ newly launched Rigorous Instruction Supports Equity (RISE) initiative, which aims to provide strategic recruitment of talented educators, equity-centered professional development, robust support for new teachers, and performance-based incentive awards at our highest-need schools. This team works to ensure cross-Office buy-in and coordination, grant compliance, and effective stakeholder engagement.
- The Leadership Development division develops and executes instructional leadership programs and initiatives aimed at enabling school leaders to provide outstanding instruction to every student, every day in schools. This team works to build the leadership capacity of school leaders with a particular focus on instruction, data analysis, intervention, and developing capacity within the school. This team also triangulates qualitative and quantitative data to evaluate the effectiveness of leadership initiatives and to ensure alignment to leaders’ developmental needs.
The Specialist, Teacher Selection and Cultivation is responsible for ensuring that key elements of the teacher and educational aide selection processes are implemented with fidelity by owning key projects, developing team talent, and setting and reaching ambitious goals. The Specialist will analyze key recruitment and selection data to make strategic decisions. Among other major workstreams, this role oversees the Teacher Selection Ambassador (TSA) program and our team’s cultivation efforts.
The Specialist, Teacher Selection and Cultivation will report to the Manager, Teacher Selection and Cultivation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.
- Supports the Manager, Teacher Selection in implementing key team initiatives, including: an aggressive and innovative national strategy for recruiting outstanding teachers to join DCPS; a seamless, efficient execution of the educational aide and teacher selection processes, including application screening (phone interviews and sample teaching videos) and quality reviewing selection decisions in order to select approximately 600 outstanding teachers candidates from approximately 4,000 applications; and, working to retain our district’s best teachers.
- Applies deep content knowledge and understanding of instructional best practices and relevant experience to the evaluation of educational aide and teacher applications; advises the TR&S leadership team on selection process design and modifications; and helps build competency in other team members.
- Manages all aspects of the Teacher Selection Ambassador (TSA) program, including: recruiting, selecting, training, and providing ongoing feedback for 60 part-time selection staff to ensure accurate selection decisions and high inter-rater reliability in the teacher selection process.
- Supervises all logistics of the Teacher Selection Ambassador (TSA) program, including: interview scheduling, budget management, selector payment, and application advancement to ensure operations are smooth for both TSAs and external candidates.
- Builds relationships and liaises with various internal departments to drive collaboration; and develops detailed recommendations and implementation plans to ensure a rigorous and accurate teacher selection process.
- Creates detailed timelines for the team’s cultivation workstreams; assesses and tracks project progress regularly using various computer programs and tools; and drives project completion holding others accountable for responsibilities and deadlines.
- Builds relationships with school leaders, teachers, and district staff to develop a deep understanding of the unique needs and cultures; and interacts with and responds effectively to urgent requests from multiple internal and external DCPS stakeholders.
- Liaises with successful applicants, other departments in central offce, and school leaders to ensure that applicants are well matched to schools and district staffing needs are met.
- Collaborates with the team in executing strategies and overseeing initiatives that support the retention of strong DCPS teachers.
- Manages communication with potential and current teacher applicants.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and three to five years of related work experience.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.
- Strong understanding of instructional best practices, with teaching experience preferred.
- Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills, as well as exceptional writing and oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills, including keen attention to detail and the ability to adhere to strict deadlines.
- Excellent time-management and a willingness to work non-standard hours.
- Ability to proactively identify challenges and work to find solutions.
