The Seed Farm is a program of Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley (CACLV), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Seed Farm is dedicated to cultivating the next generation of farmers. Working closely with partners such as Lehigh County and Penn State Extension, our organization trains new farmers and assists them in establishing sustainable farm businesses.
The Assistant Grower is responsible for helping the Farm Manager grow product and maintain 2.5-acre diversified vegetable farm. The Assistant Grower is responsible for manual field work, and preparation and delivery of product for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.
Job Duties:
Following the plans and direction of the Farm Manager in the day to day workload of 2.5-acre diversified vegetable farm, surrounding fields, incubator farm sites, and other infrastructure.
Manual field work, including planting, hoeing, hand-weeding, irrigation set up and management, pest and disease scouting and management, etc.
Harvest, washing, and packing for weekly CSA and wholesale accounts; delivery to CSA drop-off and wholesale accounts.
Assist with on-farm workshops and field days as needed
Tractor work and maintenance, including tillage, weed cultivation, and mowing.
Assist Farm Manager with on-farm demonstrations and lessons.
Occasionally oversee volunteers and CSA workshare participants.
The Assistant Grower can expect to engage with program participants, volunteers, and farm visitors of all ages.
Hours
This position comes with a seasonally variable schedule, ranging from 20 hrs/week in April and May to 40 hrs/week in June-Sept back to 20 hrs/week in October and November. Weekly schedule can be arranged with approval of Farm Manager, and may include weekend hours. The typical workday begins as early as 6 a.m. and can last until 3 p.m.
Minimum Requirements:
- One full season of organic or low-input/sustainable vegetable production experience preferred
- Tractor experience as related to diversified vegetable farming preferred
- Commitment to and experience in sustainable practices including weed, pest, disease and water management
- Basic carpentry, equipment maintenance, and small engine repairs skills preferred
- Ability to work in any weather condition
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
- Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Highly self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
- Valid driver's license and good driving record
- Personal vehicle or access to independent transportation required
