Tree Trimmer positions climb trees using ropes, slings, or saddles to perform tree pruning, cabling and bracing; use and maintain a variety of hand and power tools; train and lead the work of assigned personnel; drive and maintain a vehicle; and perform other duties as assigned.
NOTES:
- Tree Trimmer employees may be required to work at heights over 60 feet, in adverse weather conditions, and on nights or weekends in emergency situations.
- Some Tree Trimmer employees may be required to drive and operate a hydraulically controlled personnel boom (aerial tower truck) to maintain trees.
- Tree Trimmer employees who have a Mobile Crane Operator certification may be eligible for additional pay.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
EXPERIENCE: Six months of full-time experience performing tree maintenance work requiring the use of ropes, hand equipment, and power equipment. Qualifying experience MUST include climbing trees with ropes to maintain trees which are at least 30 feet in height.
NOTE:
- City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.
NOTE:
- Some Tree Trimmer positions will be required to obtain a California Class B Driver License within six months from the date of hire.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
- Experience operating a hydraulically controlled personnel boom (aerial tower truck).
- Certification as a Tree Worker/Climber Specialist and/or Arborist from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).
- Certification as a Crane Operator recognized by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO).

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes that are applicable to this job, which may include but are not limited to the following: Confirmation of citizenship/legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review/exam (which may include drug/alcohol testing); reference checks; and a fingerprint check. The fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report. Certain positions may require additional screening processes which may include a polygraph examination and/or background investigation. All of these processes must be successfully completed before employment begins. A positive test for alcohol, illegal drugs, including marijuana, or inadequately explained prescription drugs, misrepresentation, falsification, or omission of pertinent facts in any step of the screening/selection process may be cause for disqualification and/or termination of employment.
