Grower

The Grower specializes in all stages of propagation and cultivation of young plants (mainly seed and vegetative annuals) during appropriate months; assistance with finished production growing and other duties outside of main young plant propagation periods.

Tasks and Responsibilities

• Growing all phases of young crops from sow/stick to transplant, monitoring and control of the greenhouse environment, fertilization and nutrition management
• Young Plant Propagation experience required
• Growing finished product
• Ability to work with other members of the Growing Team to accomplish and complete tasks
• Crop record keeping

IPM (Disease/Sanitation/Pesticide application)

Skills and Competencies

• Critical that this employee be a world class communicator
• Proven ability to recognize issues affecting yield and quickly identify solutions
• Ability to work with and lead a team of skilled horticultural workers
• Proven ability to identify efficiencies and resource saving solution

Qualifications

Requirements

• Degree in Horticulture or appropriate related field with five years growing experience OR
• Minimum five years of hands on experience in greenhouse and field growing in a leadership/decision making capacity
• Basic computer skills
• Candidate must be able to work weekends as appropriate
• Must be self motivated
• Bilingual communication skills, specifically Spanish preferred but not required.
• Ability to move or lift up to 40 lbs
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, motivation, organization and ability to follow-through with tasks and goals
• Must have proven leadership skills

Functional experience with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word

Program focused on greenhouse production and is designed for individuals with a serious interest in becoming a commercial grower. The student/intern will primarily be part of the growing and production team, but will also be exposed to as many different areas of the business as possible.

Starting with our basic greenhouse level position, the student/intern will experience and learn daily tasks including planting, watering, fertilizing, spacing, and other duties of greenhouse production. The student/intern will advance to the level of a section grower, and gradually work up to head grower level tasks. The head grower is responsible for overall crop quality, planning, scheduling, giving specific crop cultural protocols to section growers and managing labor to achieve top quality crops within budget and on schedule.

Other areas may include:

• logistics and distribution – the student/intern will spend time at our distribution warehouse and be exposed to distribution reports and tools that guide our product distribution

• Crop record keeping
• IPM (Disease/Sanitation/Pesticide application

Qualifications

Internship Program Goal:

Provide a hands on greenhouse experience focused on production and growing in a commercial greenhouse environment. While the internship is focused on growing and production, we also hope to provide an opportunity for the intern to experience each department within our company with a goal of providing a broad overview of the inner workings of the company.

Company Overview:

Bell Nursery USA, LLC – is a wholesale grower of quality bedding plants, pot crops, mums and poinsettias. We have production facilities in MD, VA, NC and Ohio which serve hundreds of Home Depot stores from the Mid Atlantic states to as far west as the Midwestern states. We are seeking highly motivated, hard working student interns looking to pursue careers in commercial horticulture as a grower.

Grower/Internship position :

It is our goal at Bell to provide a rewarding and educational experience to the student/intern. The internship is a 7 week program (the time period can vary depending on a student's school calendar) focused on greenhouse production and is designed for individuals with a serious interest in becoming a commercial grower. The student/intern will primarily be part of the growing and production team, but will also be exposed to as many different areas of the business as possible.

Intern Project:

The student/intern will also be assigned a special project that will benefit both Bell Nursery, as well as be an opportunity for the student to show initiative and achieve a sense of responsibility. While the focus of the internship will be the grower position, the intern will also be exposed to as many facets of the business as possible. The student/intern will interact with managers of each department to learn how each department runs as well as how the different departments interact within the company.

Other areas may include:

• Logistics and Distribution – the student/intern will spend time at our distribution warehouse and be exposed to distribution reports and tools that guide our product distribution
• Retail and Merchandising –the student/intern will spend time working in the retail environment
