The primary purpose of this position is to manage the Global Hemp Innovation Center’s (GHIC) hemp germplasm program and conduct applied breeding and genetics research in hemp (
Cannabis sativa L.). Crop and Soil Science is one of the largest departments within the College of Agricultural Sciences, comprising 50 on-campus and 24 off-campus faculty, 8 departmental staff, 20 seed service professionals, and more than 100 students. College of Agricultural Sciences faculty are committed to enhancing student success by engaging students in quality academic, research, internships, global studies, and other experiential learning opportunities.
Position Duties
70% Research
- Research topics may include but are not limited to: 1) phenotyping hemp germplasm; 2) conduct research on hemp germplasm preservation; 3) conduct research on the development of synthetic hemp populations associated with improved fiber, grain, or chemical/essential oils types; 4) conduct collaborative research on hemp with other researchers in the Department of Crop and Soil Science and or/other departments in the College of Agriculture and other OSU Colleges affiliated with GHIC; 5) collaborate with researchers from other institutions including the USDA National Plant Germplasm System; 6) design and conduct participatory research projects with growers and other stakeholders; 7) develop improved hemp germplasm; and 8) develop an efficient system for maintaining and distributing hemp germplasm.
- Develop and obtain extramural funding for the support of research activity through grants, gifts, and contracts.
10% Outreach
Conduct outreach activities targeting GHIC stakeholder groups that are most relevant to the incumbents’ research program.
- Organize, host, and present at field days.
- Present at stakeholder- and grower-focused conferences and events.
- Communicate research through conferences, workshops, webinars, project websites, social media, and bulletins.
10% Scholarship
Scholarship is creative, intellectual work that is both validated by peers and communicated. Emphasis in scholarship should be placed on outcomes that recognize activities as defined by the incumbent’s position description.
- Validation of scholarship through procurement of competitive grants.
- Work with collaborators to publish scholarly works.
- To achieve promotion, scholarship for this position must include peer-reviewed materials that are durable and findable in the web environment. Documentation must be provided that shows these scholarly outputs have had an impact.
- Maintain a solid record of peer reviewed research publications.
5% Service
The incumbent will provide service to the department, college, and university through committee service and appropriate leadership as requested by the department, college, and university.

Supervise various research workers including postdoctoral scholars, faculty research assistants, temporary workers, and/or student workers as funding allows.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
PhD in crop science, agronomy, horticulture, or related discipline.
Research experience in plant breeding and genetics of hemp.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; work independently and cooperatively within a team; and work and communicate with colleagues.
Experience in managing budgets.
This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OAR 125-155-0200) as per OAR 576-056-0000 et seq.
