Overview:
Position Overview:
The primary function of the Seed Production Manager is to execute the strategy for seed production laid out by the Nursery Director. The SPM coordinates labor, materials, and process as well as monitors breeding and production cycles to ensure high-quality seed products. This role will work closely with the Nursery Director to execute time sensitive breeding and seed production program activities. The operations occur in indoor, greenhouse, hoophouse, and outdoor environments. These include production of pollen, seed, seedlings, clones, and mother plants. Other responsibilities include general sanitation and maintenance, IPM, and staffing.

Labor Management and Organization:

Ability to understand breeding and seed production program goals

Ability to work and communicate in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving teamwork- based interdepartmental environment

Ability to train and manage multiple entry-level hourly employees in their daily Nursery-related activities.

Collaboration with Nursery Manager in resource and personnel management.

Provide a safe and positive work environment for hourly employees.Field, Greenhouse and Growth Chamber activities:

Ability to learn and execute evolving Nursery and Breeding SOPs including:

Propagation and maintenance of clone-based germplasm collection
-
Staging plants for pollen or seed production in coordination with Nursery Manager
-
Sowing and transplanting field, greenhouse and growth chamber trials.

Pruning and plant maintenance.
-
Feminized pollen and self-fertilization induction
-
Pollen harvesting, processing, indexing, storage, deployment
-
Seed harvesting, processing, indexing, storage, deployment
-
Cleaning and sanitation of work areas.

Labelling and inventory of plants.

Fertigation and Quality Control
-
Implement infrastructure improvements under guidance of Nursery Director, IPM and plant health

Monitor and document greenhouse and controlled environments for potential pests, disease and nutrient deficiencies

Manage plant health with appropriate preventative measures and curative responses
-
Train hourly employees on pest identification, sanitation techniques and best practices

Mix and apply IPM treatments to all Nursery or Seed Production environments under direction of the IPM Coordinator,
Data collection and data management:

Collect and upload data from routine program activities such as germination testing, seed inventory, pollen inventory, and environmental monitoring

Data upload and storage onto ERP and other database management softwares
Supervision Received:
This role reports to the Nursery Director through weekly meetings.
Qualifications:
Qualifications & Skills:
REQUIRED:

Bachelor's degree in agronomy, plant science, biology, or a related field preferred.

Experience managing labor and working in a plant or seed production facility
-
Computer literacy and familiarity with information management systems and MS office.

Ability to communicate respectfully and professionally with a range of team members and collaborators.
-
Manage time effectively to meet deadlines and time sensitive tasks.
-
Fluency in English is required; Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.

Applicants must be eligible to work in the US.

Knowledge of conventional and organic farming practices.
-
Knowledge of hybrid seed or general seed production protocols
-
Ability to develop key relationships internally and externally and focus on project details.

Demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and multiple projects.

Working knowledge of standard office software (MS Word, Excel, etc.).
-
Ability to travel.
Preferred:
-
Comprehensive knowledge of plant biology, fertility, horticulture, and agriculture.

Comprehensive knowledge of Cannabis pests and diseases.
-
Comprehensive knowledge of Cannabis abiotic stressors (nutrition and environment).
-
Extensive experience training entry-level Nursery Assistants and IPM Scouts.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
May be required to lift up to 40 lbs.
Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
Potential exposure to allergens, especially pollen and dust.
Exposure to both hot and cold temperatures in conditions that can be dirty and dusty.
Flexibility with working hours during critical periods.
