We are seeking an Animal Research Technician who will assist with experimental protocols in a laboratory focused on behavioral pharmacology and neuroscience research into
cannabis, cannabinoids, opioids, alcohol, and nicotine in the Division of Behavioral Biology (faculty supervisors: Elise Weerts, PhD and Cassie Moore, PhD) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The Animal Research Technician will contribute to scientific research projects. There is opportunity for interested individuals for participation in writing and co-authorship of research papers.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities: Participate as a member of collaborative team in study design and development
Independently carry out daily experimental protocols with rodents, including running behavioral sessions, recording data, and maintaining behavioral equipment (checking, and as necessary, troubleshooting and making repairs/arranging for repairs to be made)
Assist with preparation and administration of experimental drug solutions to laboratory animals
Data entry and management
Maintaining drug accountability records
Providing daily care for laboratory animals
Laboratory maintenance according to USDA and AALAC guidelines
Ordering supplies as needed
Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned by the PI
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory): Bachelor's Degree in a related field such as Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience.
Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*
- JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications: 1- year work experience in veterinary or animal research environment.
Experience with handling laboratory animals, drug injections, behavioral experiments, and aseptic surgery.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Microsoft Office (word, excel).
Excellent organization skills, conscientious in following directions, attentive to details.
Must be reliable in attendance, able to work well with others.
Must be available to work limited hours on some weekends and holidays.
Physical Requirements: Able to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods.
Able to reach by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
Finger dexterity required, able to manipulate objects with fingers rather than entire hand(s) or arm(s), e.g., use of computer keyboard.
Communication skills using the spoken word.
Ability to see within normal parameters.
Ability to hear within normal range.
Ability to lift weights up to 30 lbs.
