What you will do:
This position is full time 39 hours/week position. The S05 Greenhouse Grower will work under general direction provided by the Greenhouse Manager and Director of Horticulture. This role will assist the Greenhouse Manager with the daily operations of the Plant Production Facility, which supports horticulture, natural areas, and education programs at Cornell Botanic Gardens.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in the care of seasonal plant material to include, but not limited to watering, fertilizing, plant propagation, transplanting, pinching, and pruning with attention to detail.
Maintain greenhouse work areas in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition.
Monitor greenhouse equipment and environmental conditions and report problems promptly.
Monitor plant health on a regular basis to determine and address nutritional, disease, or insect problems.
Report plant health concerns to the IPM Team.
Ensure that all protocols and procedures to safety requirements are met and Best Management Practices for Cornell Greenhouses are adhered to.
Assist with the care of garden areas throughout Cornell Botanic Gardens with direction provided by horticultural staff and Greenhouse Manager.
Amending soil, pruning plants, clearing brush, weeding, mulching, string trimming, raking leaves and edging.
Check both plant identification and interpretive labels and notify plant records manager of any missing tags.
Complete status change cards recording plant movements into and out of the specified collections, as well as reason(s) for plant loss and failure.
Operate fleet vehicles and small-scale power equipment.
Other gardening related duties as needed, including supporting IPM program and Arboriculture.
This position is full-time (39 hours/week) and will be located in Ithaca, New York.
Required Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Minimum of three years of directly related work experience in a greenhouse and/or nursery, landscaping business or public garden required.
Demonstrated horticultural skills including experience operating motorized landscape and snow removal equipment.
Must have and maintain a valid driverâs license and be cleared to drive for university business.
Excellent interpersonal (oral and written) skills to interact with a diverse range of people.
Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team and independently.
A strong customer service orientation while providing a helpful and friendly approach to serving the campus community.
Motivated to learn and takes initiative to be proactive.
Demonstrated experience utilizing independent judgment and problem solving to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
Requires physical fitness and must be able to lift heavy objects, and move more than 50 pounds.
Must be willing to work under varying climatic conditions (heat, cold, precipitation, etc.).
Applicants must have the ability and willingness to work in an environment that utilizes pesticides as a pest management tool.
May be required to report to work outside of the regularly scheduled shift to address time-sensitive operational needs, or to assist with departmental emergencies, or to deal with issues of public safety.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associateâs degree in greenhouse management or horticulture.
Successful completion of formal coursework in greenhouse management and operations, integrated pest management, agronomy, arboriculture, ornamental plant pests and equipment operation helpful.
Experience in the care of a wide range of tropical, perennial, and woody plants.

We are looking for someone with previous experience working on a farm or nursery or has worked in the landscape or landscape maintenance field and enjoys working with and caring for plants. The ideal candidate will be reliable, possess good work ethics, and will work well with others in a close-knit work environment.
This position requires working in an outdoor environment daily and has an active pace. A candidate must be willing to work as a team member to control weeds and pests in, on and around our plants. We take pride in our plant quality and are actively searching for others who feel the same. If this sounds interesting we would be willing to train the right candidate.
