The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has two immediate openings for Cannabis Workforce Initiative Associate- Senior Extension Associate for the Labor and Employment Law Program in the NYC Extension/Outreach Division of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations.
Our Team:
The Cannabis Workforce Initiative (CWI) is a collaboration between the Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) Labor and Employment Law Program (LEL) and the Workforce Development Institute. The Initiative promotes and supports social equity in the adult-use cannabis market through quality workforce development and legal education, with the goal of creating equitable workplaces and generational wealth in communities impacted by the war on drugs.
ILR’s focus is offering legal instruction and resources to employers/ entrepreneurs, community and advocacy organizations, and individuals, including those with criminal records and others harmed by the criminalization of cannabis. We offer training on the labor and employment law obligations of employers/entrepreneurs to ensure a just, fair and discrimination-free work environment and to increase the likelihood of success for new business owners. Instruction also is provided to justice impacted individuals and communities to promote social equity goals of NY’s cannabis law.
What you will do:
These Senior Extension Associate positions are part of the Labor and Employment Law Program’s Cannabis Workforce Initiative (LEL/CWI). They are responsible for programming and administration in the Initiative, including topics ranging from best practices in hiring people impacted by mass incarceration, employment rights of justice-involved people, equal employment rights, drug testing, wage and hour requirements, labor relations and human resource practices to hire and retain the best employees.
The Senior Extension Associates will collaborate with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders to develop and deliver programs and services. They also will evaluate and monitor the quality, impact, and outcomes of education, training, technical assistance, consulting and research activities of the program to ensure that it meets stated programmatic goals.
In this role, you will:
- Design curriculum and deliver training programs (in-person and remotely, as needed) related to the NYS cannabis industry, including developing a broad range of legal education programs for varied and diverse audiences, working with colleges and universities, employers, social equity licensees, unions, community groups, advocacy and reentry organizations throughout NYS.
- Prepare instructional materials, guides, toolkits, articles, reports, and other resources for use in training, on websites, with stakeholders.
- Evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of the training and resources.
- Remain current in the new national field of Cannabis Law and its impact on Labor and Employment Law broadly defined (while cannabis remains a schedule one substance under federal law but is increasingly legalized for adult and medical use in states and other jurisdictions around the nation).
Senior Extension Associate position is an academic, full-time, non-tenure track, term position with an initial appointment through June 30, 2024. The position may be reappointed based on recommendations by the Program Director and Associate Dean for Outreach as well as available funding and work.

What we need:
- Graduation from an accredited law school and admission to the bar in a state or territory of the US.
- Five or more years of labor and/or employment law litigation experience.
- Demonstrated legal research and writing ability (law journal articles, legal briefs, research and program reports, informational brochures, policy briefs, instructional materials, etc.).
- Exceptional interpersonal communication skills (oral, written, etc.).
- Five or more years of experience working with people of diverse backgrounds.
- Minimum of one to three years’ experience developing and delivering educational programming to diverse audiences via multiple modalities, including in-person, print, and virtual programming.
- Travel within NYS will be required.
You will be a top candidate with our preferred qualifications:
- Three to five years of experience working with worker rights organizations.
- Familiarity and experience with developing cannabis law in NY and other jurisdictions.
- Experience in successful grant writing and grant management.
- Fluency in Spanish.
- Admitted to the NYS bar.

What you will do:
Assist the Greenhouse Supervisor with the daily operations of the CALS Greenhouses and Growth Chambers, a College-wide service facility supporting 18 departments. Responsible for highly sensitive and unique research plant material, this position requires close attention to detail and the best horticultural judgment, while operating within the parameters of project protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide superior care for diverse and high-value plant material, using the best horticultural technique in all aspects of plant culture. Perform advanced plant care: propagate, vegetatively and by seed; transplant; stake; train; disbud; pinch; prune and harvest. Pay close attention to detail and adhere to high standards of reliability and timeliness. Monitor and adjust the greenhouse and growth chamber environment including temperature, airflow, and lighting - manually or using automated controls. Closely observe the functioning of facility mechanical and environmental control equipment and promptly inform the greenhouse supervisor or appropriate personnel of suspected malfunctions. Set up and operate greenhouse equipment including irrigation, mist and fog systems, sprayers, growth and photoperiod lighting, shade and blackout cloth.
Maintain and repair greenhouse equipment. As part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program, scout daily for pests and diseases, and apply pesticides or use biological controls as project-appropriate. Follow and promote pesticide and other applicable safety regulations. Understand, follow and promote compliance with the CALS Greenhouse Use Policy, CALS Growth Chamber Use Policy, and Best Management Practices for Cornell Greenhouses. Maintain greenhouses, growth chambers and work areas in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition. Provide responsive and courteous service to all clients. Maintain close communication with clients and the greenhouse supervisor. Anticipate plant growth needs and potential problems, and work with project personnel and the greenhouse supervisor to attain satisfactory outcomes. Provide functional supervision of student, part-time and temporary employees. Train staff and clients in plant culture and hygiene techniques.
This position is full-time (39 hours/week) and will be located in Ithaca, New York. There will be a requirement to work periodically on weekends, holidays, and the occasional extended hours.
Required Qualifications:
Associate’s degree in a plant sciences discipline with 1+ year formal training in greenhouse management or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated horticultural skills and 2+ years of greenhouse experience.
Proven competence in scouting for and identifying greenhouse pests/diseases, pesticide selection, and resistance management in an Integrated Pest Management program.
Familiarity with biocontrol concepts and organisms.
Willing and able to regularly work with and apply pesticides, including use of personal protective equipment.
Must possess and continuously maintain a New York State Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification (category 1A or 3A) or obtain within one year from start date.
Proficiency with greenhouse sprayers, fertilizer injectors and related calculations.
Physically able to regularly work from a ladder to hang lamps, black-out curtains, etc.; climb under various types of equipment; shovel dense materials; regularly lift over 50 pounds; work in high-temperature conditions and with a wide range of plant material.
Able to work with shop hand tools, portable drills and saws to construct benches, greenhouse equipment, and related projects.
Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, e-mail, and web browsers to create plant care notes and reports; maintain inventory and pest management records; communicate on a daily basis with coworkers and clients; research plant cultural and pest control information.
Demonstrated ability to work productively in a team as well as independently.
Must be flexible, service minded and respectful.
Exhibit good organizational skills and close attention to detail.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for coordination with clients and staff.
Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position and have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver’s license.
Must be able to obtain OSHA forklift operator’s certification within one year from start date.
Have reliable transportation and be willing to respond for emergency duty.
Requires periodic weekend and holiday hours, and occasional extended hours.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate’s degree in greenhouse management or Bachelor’s degree in the plant sciences or related field.
Research greenhouse or growth chamber plant care experience.
Experience in the care of a wide range of tropical and perennial plants.
Expertise with computerized greenhouse and growth chamber environmental controls.

Cornell Botanic Gardens is a living plant museum comprising over 3,500 acres of University land in three major areas: the Botanical Gardens, Arboretum, and Natural Areas. An administrative unit of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), Cornell Botanic Gardens manages and protects these areas to support teaching and research at Cornell University; to preserve habitats and rare/endangered plants; and for public use for learning and recreation. The Botanic Gardens’ mission is to inspire people—through cultivation, conservation, and education—to understand, appreciate, and nurture plants and the cultures they sustain.
What you will do:
This position is full time 39 hours/week position. The S05 Greenhouse Grower will work under general direction provided by the Greenhouse Manager and Director of Horticulture. This role will assist the Greenhouse Manager with the daily operations of the Plant Production Facility, which supports horticulture, natural areas, and education programs at Cornell Botanic Gardens.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in the care of seasonal plant material to include, but not limited to watering, fertilizing, plant propagation, transplanting, pinching, and pruning with attention to detail.
Maintain greenhouse work areas in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition.
Monitor greenhouse equipment and environmental conditions and report problems promptly.
Monitor plant health on a regular basis to determine and address nutritional, disease, or insect problems.
Report plant health concerns to the IPM Team.
Ensure that all protocols and procedures to safety requirements are met and Best Management Practices for Cornell Greenhouses are adhered to.
Assist with the care of garden areas throughout Cornell Botanic Gardens with direction provided by horticultural staff and Greenhouse Manager.
Amending soil, pruning plants, clearing brush, weeding, mulching, string trimming, raking leaves and edging.
Check both plant identification and interpretive labels and notify plant records manager of any missing tags.
Complete status change cards recording plant movements into and out of the specified collections, as well as reason(s) for plant loss and failure.
Operate fleet vehicles and small-scale power equipment.
Other gardening related duties as needed, including supporting IPM program and Arboriculture.
This position is full-time (39 hours/week) and will be located in Ithaca, New York.
Required Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Minimum of three years of directly related work experience in a greenhouse and/or nursery, landscaping business or public garden required.
Demonstrated horticultural skills including experience operating motorized landscape and snow removal equipment.
Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and be cleared to drive for university business.
Excellent interpersonal (oral and written) skills to interact with a diverse range of people.
Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team and independently.
A strong customer service orientation while providing a helpful and friendly approach to serving the campus community.
Motivated to learn and takes initiative to be proactive.
Demonstrated experience utilizing independent judgment and problem solving to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
Requires physical fitness and must be able to lift heavy objects, and move more than 50 pounds.
Must be willing to work under varying climatic conditions (heat, cold, precipitation, etc.).
Applicants must have the ability and willingness to work in an environment that utilizes pesticides as a pest management tool.
May be required to report to work outside of the regularly scheduled shift to address time-sensitive operational needs, or to assist with departmental emergencies, or to deal with issues of public safety.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate’s degree in greenhouse management or horticulture.
Successful completion of formal coursework in greenhouse management and operations, integrated pest management, agronomy, arboriculture, ornamental plant pests and equipment operation helpful.
Experience in the care of a wide range of tropical, perennial, and woody plants.
