Job Summary
The Laboratory Intern, working within a team of industry professionals, are enrolled student and alumni that are interested in gaining practical experience in compliance analytical operations. The Laboratory Intern will be responsible for learning, observing, and employing various processes and procedures for the overall assurance from sample to results; assisting in the day to day sample prep and support of the laboratory by tracking and maintaining samples and sample storage verification; cleaning the lab and laboratory equipment; data entry; assisting with batch homogenization and sampling/ field-related collection practices; restocking and verifying laboratory supply inventory; perform and verify laboratory check logs; verify pipettes, dispensettes, and balances; check eye-wash stations and emergency shower; moisture content analysis; sample batch preparation; and answering and directing phone calls. The Laboratory Intern is also responsible for the immediate notification of sample receipt, volume, preservation, labeling, or other discrepancies that could affect the laboratory鈥檚 ability to efficiently and profitably generate complete and accurate sample results on time, while meeting client expectations.
Purpose
The purpose of the Internship Program is to establish a beneficial program to incorporate college and university students and alumni educational experience in Agripharmatech disciplines with practical experience and training. This shared value is to continue positive efforts in helping to enrich local college and university students and alumni that may desire a career relating to consumer health and quality testing in the Agriculture/ Botanical Analytical industries as a field technician, lab technician, and sampler/ collector.
Objectives
Interns will be exposed to various positions in the Biology/ Microbiology and Chemistry Departments of MedCan Lab, while gaining hands-on experience in all assets of State and/ or Federal compliance analytical operations. Upon successful completion of the internship, interns will be awarded certificates of completion, and those interns that are able to demonstrate a higher aptitude of trained experience and excellent workmanship will be awarded a recommendation-for-hire if intern seeks employment at MedCan Lab and if a position is available.
Goal of Internship
Provide interns with the opportunity for acquiring career-related work experiences which apply and develop knowledge acquired academically鈥攖hrough the Agripharmatech Program and Bachelors of Science (BS) in Physical or Life Science studies鈥攊n a working environment of a private sector quality testing laboratory. Interns gain experience-based knowledge of general laboratory practices and more specific sample preparations, as well as familiarize themselves with the attractiveness of different laboratory industry career paths and develop valuable networks of contact. The internship may constitute an opportunity to develop and conduct research on the Agro-Botanical Industry for the preparation of Certificate and/ or Bachelors.
Assessment
After completion of the internship, interns are required to prepare an Internship report, where the tasks performed during the internship and other important achievements should be described. The internship report should refer to the learning outcomes designed for the Agripharmatech Certificate and Bachelor Programs in Botany, Chemistry, or Microbiology, which are listed below. Before submission, the internship report must be approved and confirmed by Laboratory Management. The rector at the institutional level has direct proxy for student internships and is considered primarily responsible for assessment of the report and final acceptance of the internship.
Role and Responsibilities
路 Handles hemp and medical cannabis samples into the laboratory according to MedCan Hawaii LLC SOPs;
路 Performs data entry of sample and test information into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS);
路 Proper attention to detail to store samples in appropriate locations and/ or contact the proper department to inform of holding-times, rush-order requests;
路 Analyze, interpret, and collect data for sample receipt preliminary analyses (moisture content analysis);
路 Sanitization and decontamination of laboratory facility, workstations, equipment, and tools;
路 Assist in sample homogenization and aliquoting;
路 Assist in sample management/ archiving and disposal;
路 Assist in sample pick-up or field-sampling, as needed;
路 Assist in Chemistry and Microbiology departments, as needed;
路 High productivity and the ability to multi-task coupled with a low error rate and attention to detail are critical characteristics of this position;
路 Demonstrates flexibility/agility and engagement in a changing environment. Expected to display good laboratory technique to avoid cross contamination or misidentification of samples;
路 Able to comprehend and perform both routine and non-routine analyses from compendial and internal sources;
路 Functional applications of the Quality Control Management System Application to include addressment of data review, out of specification reporting and Correction/Preventative actions;
路 Conduct in house Instrument Maintenance, as needed, and monitoring of Consumable Inventory;
路 Successfully complete proficiency testing and initial demonstration of competency as required.
路 Execute assigned workload on a daily basis in coordination with management and team members to effectively schedule multiple assignments;
路 Contribute to a cohesive team environment;
路 Meet project and service deadlines in collaboration with colleagues;
路 Prepare samples for analysis, as needed; and
路 Other Duties as assigned. These duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time with or without notice.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Ability to comprehend sample documentation and scientifically interpret data utilizing analytical skills and practical experience.
- Ability to interface effectively with computers, scanning devices, and software applications.
- Ability to interface and communicate effectively with a variety of levels of personnel from bench
level to upper management levels.
- Ability to manage multiple, changing priorities while maintaining department efficiencies.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of frequently sensitive information.
- Ability to clean, disinfect, and sterilize is preferred.
- Education and experience in physical or life sciences or equivalent preferred.
- Currently enrolled students or alumni of the UH System Agripharmatech Program and Bachelor鈥檚 Degree studies.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with minor analytical techniques and instrumentation including, but not limited to: analytical balances, microscopes, moisture analyzers, tissue homogenization instruments.
- Experience working in an ISO/IEC 17025 Accredited Laboratory or similar.

The standard analytical laboratory environment is one in which potential health hazards do exist. Administrative, operations, technical and professional staff is expected to safely operate in accordance with applicable and appropriate health and safety policies and procedures, as prescribed by the Environmental Health and Safety Manual.
Laboratory staff can be expected to work in areas where hazards associated with, but not limited to air-borne pathogens. Biological materials, hazardous substances and radioactive material exist and are handled. Appropriate training is provided regarding these hazards and staff is expected to adhere to all health and safety policies, at all times, whether they are in writing or verbalized to management. Operates in a professional office environment and some remote work may be allowed.
