Title: Development Director
Reports to: Scout Executive/CEO
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Four-year college degree, 21 years of age, American citizen (or declare intent), willingness to abide by the policies and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. Successful completion of interview process and background check. Three to five years development, donor relations, grant writing and fundraising experience preferred. Knowledge of Blackbaud Fundraising Systems beneficial but not required.
JOB SUMMARY:
Serve as executive staff member of Jayhawk Area Council with the responsibility of developing and implementing all aspects of the fundraising strategy for the Jayhawk Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. Provide direct support to the Vice President of Fundraising and Vice President of Endowment. Reporting to the Scout Executive, the Development Director will be responsible for achieving the council’s fundraising goals and engaging sponsors and donors in ongoing events and activities. This includes leveraging key relationships and contacts within an 11-county territory in Northeast Kansas.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN. With Scout Executive and Assistant Scout Executive, create and implement council campaign plans, including analysis, prospecting and development and guide appropriate staff to meet set goals before June 30. Serve as campaign manager for the executive board campaign. Show increase in total dollars raised in each function over previous year. Increase total number of donors over previous year. Recruit, train, lead and motivate sufficient quality men and women to make the campaigns successful.
2. SPECIAL EVENTS. Recruit and work with key volunteers to serve as chairman for the council’s Special Events including, Boy Scout Golf Classic, Topeka’s 20 Under 40, and Distinguished Citizen Dinner. Set event goals and support the event chairs in committee recruitment, event budget management, and physical arrangements.
3. VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP. Maintain a visible presence in the community though approved service club membership. Actively seek opportunities to share the Scouting story with the community. Participate in community volunteer opportunities that improve the visibility of Scouting. Recruit sufficient quality men and women to serve on committees. Regularly identify and call upon prospective volunteers to tell Scouting story. Ensure that proper training and coaching occur for each position. Assist in recruitment of quality of manpower in the council.
4. FOUNDATIONS. Serve as the lead council professional for grant and foundation development. Research for new potential grants, meet with foundation directors to determine the best methods to secure support for Scouting programs in the Jayhawk Area Council.
5. PRODUCT SALE. Provide support to the council’s product sale by working with the campaign chair to recruit quality district representation, develop sales support materials and sales incentive programs. Work with the product company representative to ensure quality service.
6. UNITED WAYS. Serve as the council’s liaison for area United Ways. Work with local leaders to determine best methods to engage in local United Way activities in order to best position the Jayhawk Area Council to receive funding. Submit proposals and complete all required reports.
7. ENDOWMENT. Assist in identifying, researching, and cultivating prospective donors to the council’s endowment fund. Work with the Vice President of Endowment to recruit volunteers for the endowment committee, plan and conduct cultivation events, recognize donors to the council’s endowment fund.
8. MEMBERSHIP & MARKETING. Support the council’s Membership & Marketing Committee to develop an annual marketing plan that includes newsletters, annual report, ongoing media releases and media relations, and other opportunities to create positive visibility for Scouting in the community.
9. MODE OF OPERATION. Be a model of the ideals of Scouting. Represent the council in a positive way. Work cooperatively with leadership, coworkers, and others. Be able to make and keep commitments, completing assignments on time. Effectively manage time and organize work to achieve expected results. Be efficient at backdating and planning. Use innovation and adaptability to be most effective. Use all available resources efficiently. Accept coaching and skill development. Be able to communicate expectations to others and manage several projects simultaneously.
