Reporting to the Head of Operations, the Head Grower/Cultivation Director position is responsible for the management of crop growing operations for the site in Smithville Missouri. This position is responsible for the overall care of the Grow facility, including the principles and practices of plant cultivation, propagation, protection and crop rotations. The grower will be held to operate under strict very specific operating procedures that cannot be deviated or altered unless approved by his or her manager. The ideal candidate is an experienced agricultural operation professional that is ready to create a commercial scale cultivation operation from scratch.
Responsibilities include writing the comprehensive operations plan, design and oversight of facilities build out, staffing and training, genetics acquisitions, company goal setting, facility maintenance, compliance, and production.
- Oversee the creation and implementation of all cultivation operations, plans, policies, and procedures- including propagation, plant care, IPM, health and safety operations, harvest, and post-harvest.
- Create and lead training programs for all cultivation personnel on plant propagation, plant care, plant harvest, post-harvest, and compliance.
- Create and implement best practices for plant health and care. Develop effective natural integrated pest/disease control with STRICT adherence to all state compliance and environmental safety regulations.
- Select, install, and train staff on the operation of the cultivation facility’s automated tools: including grow room temperature controls, lighting, watering and irrigation systems, and other infrastructure.
- Monitor climate equipment and data – repair, adjust, and maintain as necessary to ensure proper functionality. Develop a monthly inspection process to identify maintenance and repair needs.
- Coordinate with the Operations Manager on expenses and budget balances, forecast future expenses, and create budgets for the cultivation operation.
- Identify the plants and their problems (diseases, pests, and others). Manage integrated pest management program.
- Plan, organize, direct, control, and/or coordinate activities of workers engaged in propagating, cultivating, harvesting and packing various cannabis varieties.
- Train new employees in all necessary cultivating techniques: including pruning, de-leafing, thinning, irrigation, cloning, mixing fertilizers, and pest control.
- Manage all Cultivation/Grow personnel under their direction, supervising their activities and training them in the appropriate techniques for their specific position.
- Track labor efficiency and make appropriate changes in labor crew to meet company goals. Ensure the labor quality meets company standards and actively manage out poor performers.
- Administrative user of environmental control system (Argus) and required to withhold environmental and irrigation schedules to accommodate for each harvest/crop.
- Coordinate biological control department to monitor pest and disease levels.
- Ensure all safety policies (worker safety, food safety, etc) are followed and enforced and ensure strict crop hygiene practices are followed and enforced.
- Establish and maintain a program to record crop growth data (weekly crop report, climate report, production, etc.).
- Responsible for inspecting facilities for signs of disrepair, and delegating repair duties to staff.
Skills and Qualifications/Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (preferably in a related field such as Agriculture, Horticulture, Botany, Biology or related discipline)
- Four-(4) plus years of experience in a regulated cannabis market.
- Strong leadership experience managing teams of 30+ members.
- Experience managing operations with 7,000+ plants.
- Grow design/build experience.
- Experience selecting, installing, and maintaining automated agricultural equipment.
- Must be able to identify the plants and their problems (diseases, pests, and others).
- Must be able to plan, organize, direct, control, and/or coordinate activities of workers engaged in propagating, cultivating, harvesting and packing various cannabis varieties.
- Strong verbal and analytical skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
- Must be able to budget and forecast crop expenses and yields.
- Must be computer literate in Excel, Word and capable of running greenhouse computerized software.
- Must be willing to work some weekends/Holidays.
- Must be 21 years of age or older and have a valid driver’s license and clean DMV.
- Must pass pre-placement physical, respirator clearance and fit testing.
- Must be able to pass a background check

- Experience in a newly legal cannabis market (less than a year old)
- Experience with a startup cannabis company
- Experience in an agricultural R&D environment
- Experience in an entirely automated facility
- Experience with extraction, infused product production, and distribution
