Wilson Farm, located in Lexington, MA, has an immediate opening for a full-time/year-round Live Plant Buyer ("Guru") in our Garden Department to join our team. While we are known for our outstanding customer service, wide varieties of produce, grocery, culinary and floral offerings, we also stock a colorful selection of live plants and gardening supplies throughout the seasons to delight our customers. The Garden Department requires a hands-on approach, someone who is passionate about all things green! This position has overall responsibility for the ordering/inventory and care of Live Plants (interior house plants, foliage and tropical varieties, ornamental, Bonzai, dish gardens, seasonal, gift plants and more) This position reports to the Manager of the Garden Shop Department and to the owner and President.
Prior experience (3-5 years) and working knowledge of live plant material and supplemental gardening products is required. Must have experience working with customers in identifying plant growing requirements, pests and remedies as to be able to offer up accurate customer recommendations. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wilson Farm experienced an increase in interest of interior greenery last year and this trend continues. We love to educate our customers!
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Inventory/order/receive live plants via growers/vendors.
- Create visually appealing merchandise displays; adequately stock plants/garden shop products to encourage sales – seasonally and off-season.
- Engage with customers to address questions and make plant and/or product selections.
- Ensuring signage, pricing information, and displays are accurate so that merchandise is easy to locate.
- General cleanup of retail greenhouse, shop and yard area to maintain neat appearance, this includes general plant maintenance: watering, feeding etc.
- Weekly review/reconciliation of all billing from vendors to ensure accuracy of orders vs received items – handle damaged goods/returns for credit.
- With the Garden Shop Manager, plan seasonally for retail plant and product ordering, engaging vendors and associates to meet store needs to ensure outstanding selections available to customers all year-round. Important to stay current on trends in home styles/decorating that are using plants as focal points with “work from home” customers.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 3+ years of working with live plants in retail garden center/nursery/greenhouse environment. MUST HAVE advanced live plant knowledge - no cannabis here.
- Must be self-directed, motivated, demonstrate exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills, be analytical and have sound judgement.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Weekends/holidays are part of the general FT work schedule.
- Associates degree, Horticulture background.

- Demonstrated ability to work well with a crew and with other managers (regardless of department) as well as senior management.
- Reliability - an important quality that all applicants must have for this job.
Physical requirements:
- Standing for prolonged periods of time; bending, reaching - throughout 10 hours shifts
- Must be able to grasp/lift/carry approx.40-50+lb plant trays, pots, bagged goods (soils and fertilizers) and any additional associated products such as bundled firewood, ice melt etc.
- This position will require activity both indoors/outdoors
