Bilingual
Safety and Health Specialist on our Agriculture team for our Compliance Division of Occupational Safety & Health, you will take personal responsibility to get hazards corrected before workers get hurt.
You will perform routine and complex investigations in agriculture industries to determine compliance with WISHA standards, write reports, propose penalties, and investigate accidents, fatalities, employee complaints, referrals, and provide technical assistance in abatement of hazards. Examples of agricultural worksites include dairies, farms, nurseries, fields, orchards, vineyards, cannabis grow sites, oyster beds/farms and other aquaculture, cranberry bogs, tree farms, and temporary worker housing. This position also conducts safety inspections in other industries as needed.
You will have the ability to speak Spanish fluently and be able to communicate with individuals when conducting their normal duties within the safety compliance program as well as across program boundaries if and when a Spanish speaking employee is needed.

Duties
Some of what you’ll do:
Travel to employers' place of business or work sites and perform routine and complex inspections and investigations in the agriculture and other industries of employee complaints, referrals, accidents and fatalities to determine compliance with WISHA standards in multiple high hazards industries.- Conducts interviews in English and Spanish, reads correspondence in Spanish and transcribes into written English language. Performs opening conferences with employers and employee representatives in English or Spanish as required by the situation.
- Lead other safety & health professionals in complex investigations (unless hired at the SHS2 level).
- Determine employer compliance with WISHA Safety & Health Standards and write reports documenting employee exposure, proposed citations, and monetary penalties as appropriate.
- Present verbal and written reports of your findings to employers and employee representatives.
- Defends citations at appeal hearing both formal and informal.
- Take new Safety & Health Specialists on ride along inspections prior to and during their training; training new inspectors on how to do inspections, write reports and how to investigate accidents (unless hired at the SHS2 level).
- Coach and mentor new Safety & Health Specialists during their on the job training. Assist in evaluating their skills and provide feedback to maximize their training opportunities (unless hired at the SHS2 level).

Qualifications
REQUIRED:
The ability to communicate effectively speak and write Spanish in a workplace setting. Our top applicant will be required to pass an assessment of their ability to write and speak Spanish fluently. To qualify at the SHS 3 in-training (SHS2) level, the following is required:
- A bachelor's degree from an ABET Accredited Program in Occupational Safety & Health or Safety & Health Management.
OR
- A Bachelor's degree in a related field AND two years of experience as a safety and health officer, consultant, inspector, or related experience;
OR
- Four years of full-time journey level experience in one or more of the following industries: construction, manufacturing, agriculture, health/medical, service industry or related field, AND two years of experience as a safety and health officer, consultant, inspector, or related experience.
To qualify at the SHS 3, the following is required:
- Experience in construction trades or industries that have a higher than average experience factor.
- Three years as an L&I Safety and Health Specialist or Industrial Hygienist;

Bilingual
Industrial Hygienists within our
Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH). In this role, you will perform complex workplace inspections and investigations in
Agriculture for all types of occupational health hazards to determine compliance with WISHA standards.
You will write reports, propose penalties, and investigate accidents, fatalities, employee complaints, and referrals, and provide technical assistance in abatement of hazards. This position also industrial hygiene inspections in other industries as needed. The IH3 leads other Safety and Health Specialists and Industrial Hygienists in complex investigations, high visibility fatalities, and more complicated inspections. The IH3-In Training position (IH2) performs routine and comprehensive inspections, but is not expected to lead other inspectors.
Examples of agricultural worksites include dairies, farms, nurseries, fields, orchards, vineyards, cannabis grow sites, oyster beds/farms and other aquaculture, cranberry bogs, tree farms, and temporary worker housing.
In addition to evaluating noise, chemicals, respiratory protection, confined spaces and the more typical industrial hygiene hazards, industrial hygienists in the agriculture industry conduct inspections related to cholinesterase monitoring, pesticide drift, pesticide reentry time limits, and other requirements in the Worker Production Standard section of WAC 296-307, Agriculture.
You will speak Spanish fluently and be able to communicate with individuals when conducting their normal duties within the safety compliance program as well as across program boundaries if and when a Spanish speaking employee is needed.

Duties
Some of what you'll do:
- Frequent daily travel with occasional overnight travel statewide to employer’s business location or worksites to perform complex investigations and routine inspections in most industries to determine compliance with WISHA workplace health standards.
- Identify, evaluate and recommend abatement methods for occupational health hazards.
- Conduct accident investigations of fatalities, catastrophes and serious injuries to determine causes.
- Use industrial hygiene sampling equipment and techniques to collect air and bulk samples of dusts, mists, fumes, gases, vapors and other hazardous materials.
- Measure airborne chemical exposures; measure noise frequency and intensity, airflows, temperatures and humidity.
- Conduct pre- and post-inspection calibrations.
- Perform opening conferences with employer and employee representatives. Conduct walk around assessments of work sites, take field notes, photos and video, and make observations.
- Conduct interviews; review safety data sheets, written safety programs, reports, and records provided by employer and employee representatives.
- Organize, write and edit comprehensive investigative reports; prepare reports and summaries.
- Prepare and input documentation data, citations wording, penalties, and/or recommendations.
- Appear and testify as a State witness at re-assumption hearings, before the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals, and civil cases.
- Answer questions from the public regarding health hazards and applicable standards on the phone and in person.

Qualifications

AND
- ONE year of experience as an industrial hygienist, safety and health manager, safety and health consultant, or as a chemist or engineer working on environmental health or air sanitation problems. A Master's degree involving major study in industrial hygiene will substitute for 1 year of experience.
Industrial Hygienist 3
- A Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and/or health, industrial hygiene, chemistry, physics, chemical, mechanical or sanitary engineering, environmental science, nursing, medicine, biology or related field
AND
- Three years of experience as an industrial hygienist. (Industrial Hygiene experience must include the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and management of occupational health hazards such as chemical, physical and biological}.

Safety and Health Specialist on our Agriculture team for our Compliance Division of Occupational Safety & Health, you will take personal responsibility to get hazards corrected before workers get hurt.
You will perform routine and complex investigations in agriculture industries to determine compliance with WISHA standards, write reports, propose penalties, and investigate accidents, fatalities, employee complaints, referrals, and provide technical assistance in abatement of hazards. Examples of agricultural worksites include dairies, farms, nurseries, fields, orchards, vineyards, cannabis grow sites, oyster beds/farms and other aquaculture, cranberry bogs, tree farms, and temporary worker housing. This position also conducts safety inspections in other industries as needed.
You will have the ability to speak Spanish fluently and be able to communicate with individuals when conducting their normal duties within the safety compliance program as well as across program boundaries if and when a Spanish speaking employee is needed.

Duties
Some of what you’ll do:
Travel to employers' place of business or work sites and perform routine and complex inspections and investigations in the agriculture and other industries of employee complaints, referrals, accidents and fatalities to determine compliance with WISHA standards in multiple high hazards industries.- Conducts interviews in English and Spanish, reads correspondence in Spanish and transcribes into written English language. Performs opening conferences with employers and employee representatives in English or Spanish as required by the situation.
- Lead other safety & health professionals in complex investigations (unless hired at the SHS2 level).
- Determine employer compliance with WISHA Safety & Health Standards and write reports documenting employee exposure, proposed citations, and monetary penalties as appropriate.
- Present verbal and written reports of your findings to employers and employee representatives.
- Defends citations at appeal hearing both formal and informal.
- Take new Safety & Health Specialists on ride along inspections prior to and during their training; training new inspectors on how to do inspections, write reports and how to investigate accidents (unless hired at the SHS2 level).
- Coach and mentor new Safety & Health Specialists during their on the job training. Assist in evaluating their skills and provide feedback to maximize their training opportunities (unless hired at the SHS2 level).

Qualifications
REQUIRED:
The ability to communicate effectively speak and write Spanish in a workplace setting. Our top applicant will be required to pass an assessment of their ability to write and speak Spanish fluently. We do not use translating software. Employees with bilingual responsibilities receive a 5% increase in pay.- Must possess a valid unrestricted driver license and may not have convictions for driving under the influence or driving offenses that endangered or harmed others within the past 7 years
To qualify at the SHS 3 in-training (SHS2) level, the following is required:
- A bachelor's degree from an ABET Accredited Program in Occupational Safety & Health or Safety & Health Management.
OR
- A Bachelor's degree in a related field AND two years of experience as a safety and health officer, consultant, inspector, or related experience;
OR
- Four years of full-time journey level experience in one or more of the following industries: construction, manufacturing, agriculture, health/medical, service industry or related field, AND two years of experience as a safety and health officer, consultant, inspector, or related experience.
To qualify at the SHS 3, the following is required:
- Experience in construction trades or industries that have a higher than average experience factor.
- Three years as an L&I Safety and Health Specialist or Industrial Hygienist;
OR
- A Bachelor's degree AND three years of experience as a safety and health officer, consultant, inspector, or related experience;
OR
- Four years of full-time journey level experience in one or more of the following industries: construction, manufacturing, agriculture, health/medical, service industry or related field, AND three years of experience as a safety and health officer, consultant, inspector, or related experience.
College-level education will substitute, year for year; for up to four years of non-safety and health experience. Additional safety and health qualifying experience will substitute year for year, for education.

- Certified Safety Professional
- Safety and health management experience in the agriculture industry.

- Knowledge of Safety and Health Rules and Regulations, the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) and the federal government's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The ability to explain to customers what their businesses must do to comply with these regulations.
Supplemental Information
If hired as a SHS3 In-training (SHS2) the monthly base pay salary range is:
Range 55: $4,509 - $5,913
If hired as a SHS3 the monthly base pay salary range is:
Range 58: $4,855 - $6,368
****In addition to the above basic pay range, you will also receive an
additional 12.5%
pay for the 5% bilingual pay and the 7.5% increase for all Compliance positions.****
