Research Farm Grower
About the company: Research Designed for Agriculture (RD4AG) provides independent agricultural research services to the agribusiness industry. In business since 1983, RD4AG is one of the leading CRO's in agri-products testing in a broad range of crops. As a contract research organization, we are partners in research and innovation with each one of our client companies in the assessment and regulatory aspects involved in developing exciting new technologies to further the success of agriculture in providing food and fiber. In the field, under real world conditions, we generate data for products and systems such as fertilizers, organic and conventional pesticides, growth enhancers, conventional and biotech seed and plant varieties, irrigation, equipment, farming systems, and more. We are a small, dynamic group of people who care about each other. We are passionate about what we do and feel that we are an important part of “Developing Tomorrow’s Agriculture.”
About the job:
The Research Farm Grower is responsible for the planning and execution of crops and blocks utilized for research purposes. This includes all of the typical functions of planting, irrigating, growing and harvesting of a wide variety of plants exclusively for small plot research or specialty seed production purposes. We grow over 75 different crops, common and not so common to the region. Vegetable crops include leafy greens, cucurbits, fruiting vegetables, brassicas, herbs, with field crops including small grains, pulses, corn, soy, canola, cotton, alfalfa, etc.
Growing research plots is not farming! This is not production agriculture. It takes as much time in planning, field prep, set up and execution to grow 1 acre of wheat or lettuce as it takes to grow a 100 acre field. And in many ways, it is harder. You don't have the first few row passes to get the equipment set; those first few rows may be the entire plot, and encompass a dozen varieties! Precision is critical: you can't assess which variety is better or whether a biostimulant is effective if they didn't all get uniform water, fertility and pest management. You'll have to work very closely with the research staff to assure growing practices are consistent with clients' protocols and you'll have to be obsessive at detailed recordkeeping. But what a rewarding experience to stand with the clients in the field when they see the seed for their next season's breeding program or their product working; to exchange high fives with your teammates; to tell your friends that you helped develop a new, drought resistant crop or a sustainable technology for agriculture.

- project management experience in setting up and maintaining schedules
- flexibility to accommodate changing priorities mid-stream
