Job Summary

Overstock.com is seeking an experienced Horticulturist to manage a new 9,000SF greenhouse at its corporate campus in Salt Lake City, UT. Intended as a benefit to employees, this unique project will design, create and supply high quality, organic produce to the cafeteria on a year-round basis. Oversee and manage all aspects of the greenhouse from crop production to facility maintenance.

Job Responsibilities

• Create planting schedules and allocate growing space to maintain continuous production.
  
• Negotiate costs of supplies with vendors
  
• Forecast crop expenses and yields.
  
• Provide restaurant with crop availability and schedule
  
• Work closely with the kitchen operator to plan crop production in accordance with demand.
  
• Maintains inventory of organic fertilizers, media, seeds and other supplies.
  
• Create and maintain detailed records of growing techniques and production; review records and reports to identify trends
  
• Forecast future space and production requirements.
  
• Designs and implements communication & educational programs and develops key materials for external and internal audiences as it relates to the Greenhouse
  
• Develop growing procedures and cultivation techniques.
  
• Plans for and requests temporary staff on a timely basis to ensure availability
  
• Maintains a current knowledge of industry best practices and technologies.
  
• Recommends equipment needs and facilities upgrades or repairs.
  
• On call 24/7 in the event of equipment or crop failure.
  
• All other duties and responsibilities necessary to ensure a successful greenhouse operation
  
• Monitor plants and growing conditions, adjusting environmental controls, to maximize production.
  

Job Requirements

Skills

• Proven growing experience with multiple crop types and plant varieties, using organic materials
  
• 4 plus years of relevant experience preferably in horticultural research or development with practical application with proven results
  
• Proven negotiation skills
  
• Attention to detail, strong organizational and task scheduling abilities
  
• Flexible and adaptable
  
• Proactive, ability to anticipate and prevent problems
  
• Professional communication skills
  
• Excellent communication and presentation skills

• Financial and/or business management experience
  

Education

• Bachelor Degree in Horticulture or related AG science field (minimum GPA of 3.5) required

Physical Requirements

Duties of this job may require lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects weighing up to 100 lbs., working in a garden environment, operating various hand and motor powered equipment, standing on concrete or dirt floors, walking for extended periods of time, stooping, bending, twisting, and being exposed to loud noises and various temperatures and scents.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires you to sit, stand and perform general office functions. You may also be required to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally. Bending, stooping and reaching are also frequently required.
