Maui Greens Inc. is a leafy greens production company operating on the island of Maui that grows and distributes greenhouse grown living produce to local markets and customers.
Job Overview:
Maui Greens is looking for an experienced greenhouse grower specializing in leafy greens production to work in the company’s plant science department to facilitate the greenhouse production of our unique living products. This role would augment the existing production staff and greenhouse management to provide experience in optimizing horticulture and production outputs of the facility. This grower position would be hands on and responsible for leading horticultural management, including but not limited to environmental control strategies, fertigation and plant nutritional recipe development, assessing and mitigating pest and nutritional issues, pesticide application, seed germination, cultivar evaluations, greenhouse operations, trouble-shooting fertigation systems, data collection, SOP development, and creating and presenting summary reports.
Requirements:
· Experience working in a leafy greens production greenhouse.
· Experience identifying and mitigating various issues associated with greenhouse operations and production.
· Demonstrated ability for plant experimentation, execution of horticulture trials, and completion of research projects.
· Experience with greenhouse environmental and fertigation control systems.
· Familiarity with and experience using environmental measurement equipment (quantum meter, pH meter, EC meter, etc.) and other horticultural related standard laboratory equipment.
· Ability to work in a startup environment with rapidly evolving goals and timelines.
· Passion for finding a new way of growing clean, nutritious food.
· Strong verbal and written communication skills.
· Ability to take, assimilate, and implement direction from others in the Plant Science department and company.
· Strong organization skills and ability to track and record many different types of information.
· Computer proficiency with: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Outlook, or similar email client.
· Ability to work 5 days per week.
· Ability to work efficiently under outdoor and greenhouse conditions.
· Previous experience interacting/training small teams with leadership capability.
· Ability to train for and receive a pesticide applicator’s license.
Responsibilities:
· Support basic and applied research goals in developing plant production optimization experiments and testing.
· Participate in designing and conducting plant science experiments to generate accurate and detailed data sets.
· Quickly identify pest and/or nutritional issues and provide mitigation strategy and implementation.
· Monitor, collect, analyze, and report on experiment data on an ongoing basis.
· Integrate existing and new methods to improve yield, quality, and plant health.
· Participate in the development, review, and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s). Inform and keep team members up to date on new protocols.
· Participate in nutrient/fertigation solution recipe development, preparation, and maintenance.
· Prepare and operate plant production equipment and consumables for use in R&D and production activities.
· Perform routine and required horticultural product sampling and measurements.
· Program and maintain environmental setpoints in greenhouses.
· Read, understand, and implement all department SOPs for the Plant Science R&D lab.
· Participate in supporting Food Safety and other compliances.
· Make recommendations to the research and operations procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
Required Qualifications:
· Minimum 5 years of experience working in a greenhouse and CEA leafy greens production facility
· Ability to work a flexible schedule that could include some weekends and occasional travel.
· Must pass a background check.
· Willingness to relocate to Maui, Hawaii
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience with many different types of hydroponic growing systems and plant nutrition.
· Experience with precision fertigation systems.
· Experience with various substrate-based plant production systems.
· Operational and/or Ag background. Mechanically inclined. Ability to design, procure, assemble, and operate research supporting assemblies and devices.
