Greenhouse Team Member (Irrigator/Waterer)
*Please note this position does not have anything to do with cannabis. This posting is for an Irrigation Team Member to assist with the watering needs and care of potted perennial, bulb, and fruit nursery product.
DeGroot is looking for a reliable worker to assist with daily watering needs, occasional spraying, and other horticultural growing related tasks. This position frequently requires the expenditure of physical labor and the use of motorized equipment and other tools.
On average this is a 40 hour per week position. Weekend work hours are mandatory for this current opening. Applicant should be open to working Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as well as 2 other chosen week days. This position is eligible for benefits after 90 days of hire.
This position requires training followed by independent work.
Duties and Responsibilities: -
· Check and determine watering needs of all plants in the multiple greenhouses and growing pad areas. Watering is mostly done by hose and watering wand.
· Weed potted plants, flats and trays if irrigating duties get completed early.
· Demonstrate attention to detail with all growing related tasks this could include greenhouse sanitization and clean up.
· Work with other DeGroot team members completing other growing related tasks if all above duties are complete.
Qualifications/Requirements:
· Be able and willing to lift 50 lbs
· Be able and willing to water with repetitive motions for long periods of time.
· Be able and willing to follow directions and work independently as well as part of a team
· Be able and willing to communicate well with others
· Be able and willing to work in all weather conditions
· Reliable transportation is a must
· Able to work Saturday and Sunday (weekends) as well as 3 other weekdays. 5 days a week in total.
· Plant identification skills are helpful.
· General knowledge on the care and needs of plants is helpful
· Experience working in other greenhouses or commercial growing facilities is a plus

2.2.4 Maintain detailed records of crop activities and observations, including pesticide applications and growth records.
2.2.5 Learn and adopt new growing techniques and technologies, staying current with best practices in the horticulture industry.
2.2.6 Perform daily work such as, but not limited to cleaning and disinfecting the greenhouses, flats, pots, tools, and work areas; transplanting, pruning, propagating; weeding, applying fertilizer or pesticides; and performing observation walkthroughs.

5.2 Experience: At least 1 year of hands-on experience in a nursery environment, preferably in a greenhouse with experience in growing perennials, shrubs, and small fruit plants.
5.3 Skills: Basic computer skills with the ability to learn and use new programs and applications. Must have highly effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly in English is required, with bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish preferred. Ability to select from a variety of established growing management procedures. Other skills required are attention to detail, keen observation skills, ability to follow strict protocols, work well both independently and as a team, and outstanding interpersonal skills with experience dealing with difficult or challenging employees.
5.4 Physical: Full use of all senses, including physical ability to stand continually, and sit, crouch, bend, reach, walk, climb and maneuver around racking/shelving, farm equipment, packaging equipment, and service areas, including outside in all types of weather conditions. 1.0 JOB SUMMARY
The basic function of the Assistant Grower (AG) is to assistant in the management of all growing activities in the fields and greenhouses. The AG is responsible for proper care of plants in the greenhouses, including applying principles and practices of plant propagation, cultivation, and protection. The AG focuses on cleaning, weeding, spot watering, plant health checks, inventory counts, and team supervision. When not performing essential duties listed below, the AG is required to perform other duties as assigned by the Head Grower (HG). The AG’s primary responsibilities are broken down into the following categories:

2.0 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following represents the list of essential duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Grower. Other duties may be assigned at the discretion of the Head Grower.
2.1 General Management and Supervision Responsibilities:
2.1.1 Lead small groups to accomplish tasks in the Growing Division.
2.1.2 Follow standard operating procedures and comply with all safety regulations, ensuring members of the team do as well.
2.1.3 Adhere to overall company policies and procedures.
2.1.4 Take any reasonable action necessary to carry out responsibilities of the position, so long as such action does not deviate from established company policies and is consistent with the company mission and vision and sound business judgment.
2.2 Growing Responsibilities:
2.2.1 Discuss and plan plant growing activities with the Head Grower that are consistent with operation schedules.
2.2.2 Monitor growing conditions and discuss changes in humidity, moisture, temperature, and other environmental conditions with the HG to ensure conformance with quality standards.
2.2.3 Scout for and identify crop issues, bringing them to the attention of the HG.
2.2.4 Maintain detailed records of crop activities and observations, including pesticide applications and growth records.
2.2.5 Learn and adopt new growing techniques and technologies, staying current with best practices in the horticulture industry.
2.2.6 Perform daily work such as, but not limited to cleaning and disinfecting the greenhouses, flats, pots, tools, and work areas; transplanting, pruning, propagating; weeding, applying fertilizer or pesticides; and performing observation walkthroughs.

3.1 Additional duties as assigned by the HG.

The following positions directly report to the Assistant Grower, when assigned:

5.0 JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
5.1 Education: College or University graduate (preferred), with studies in horticulture, agriculture, botany, or biology preferred; or equivalent experience in nursery production.
5.2 Experience: At least 1 year of hands-on experience in a nursery environment, preferably in a greenhouse with experience in growing perennials, shrubs, and small fruit plants.
5.3 Skills: Basic computer skills with the ability to learn and use new programs and applications. Must have highly effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly in English is required, with bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish preferred. Ability to select from a variety of established growing management procedures. Other skills required are attention to detail, keen observation skills, ability to follow strict protocols, work well both independently and as a team, and outstanding interpersonal skills with experience dealing with difficult or challenging employees.
5.4 Physical: Full use of all senses, including physical ability to stand continually, and sit, crouch, bend, reach, walk, climb and maneuver around racking/shelving, farm equipment, packaging equipment, and service areas, including outside in all types of weather conditions. Ability to lift 40 lbs. during job duties.
5.5 Mental: Able to organize and manage information related to growing management.
6.0 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA AND EVALUATION
The position of Assistant Grower is extremely important to the organization and its future ability to capture and maintain its business position and goals. The AG has significant authority over the growing resources within the organization and will be measured in part by the following performance criteria.
6.1 All the above Duties and Responsibilities are performed in a thorough and timely manner.
6.2 The growing goals and objectives of the Operations Department are met.
6.3 Plants in the greenhouses are successfully planted, maintained, and harvested with minimal losses. Harvested and finished plants meet quality and yield standards.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $38,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year
