About the Role
As a key member of Blue Ocean Barns’ team, the Field Cultivation Technician will play an important role in the daily care of our algae at our 4.0 acre outdoor farm. Technicians contribute to all aspects of feeding and caring for algae which includes monitoring, sampling, transfers, and harvests. Technicians ensure that the algae consistently have a clean and safe environment in order to achieve optimum growth and quality standards per Blue Ocean Barns protocols.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Perform duties accurately and according to protocols, providing optimal care to the algae independently and with minimal supervision, once trained.
- Maintain daily records of care activities and observations, noting patterns and changes.
- Prepare clean vessels and nutrient-rich water according to protocols and conduct water exchanges.
- Assist with and maintain inventory of equipment and supplies.
- Create and maintain a tidy environment, following all safety and biosecurity procedures.
- Respect and protect the confidentiality of the company’s proprietary information.
- Commit to bringing one's best self to work daily including an eagerness to learn and contribute as a team member and as an individual.
- Perform other duties as needed or directed by the supervisor.
Physical and Other Requirements
- Ability to work at least 40 hours per week; including occasional weekends, holidays and/or on call. Regular attendance and punctuality is essential to carrying out the duties of this position.
- Ability to stand for extended periods, primarily outdoors in a hot, humid environment, occasionally on wet and uneven surfaces.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 65 pounds.
- Ability to use math skills in performing duties.
- Ability to learn and use various computer systems (for example: Excel, Google docs, Hoboware).
- Ability to work with and around chemicals such as bleach and acid, following all safety guidelines including passing a respirator fit test.
- Excellent driving record with ability to operate an electric golf cart on uneven terrain.

About the Role
As the team at BOB expands to our prototype outdoor farm in Hawai’i, we are seeking an expert operator with aquaculture experience who will lead in planning, coordinating, and performing the production of our algae at scale in our outdoor system. We seek team members who share the values of the company and who are energized by the challenge of creating a carbon-neutral livestock industry for the next generation.
Critical to our success is a team member who is, firstly, skilled in the art and practice of managing aquaculture systems and teams of rapidly growing enterprises, but who is also able to perform the aquaculture work itself. This is a “working manager” role, meaning the responsibilities are split between managing elements of the field operation and performing the algae work. In our present circumstances, we are looking for someone to take the lead as follows:
Responsibilities: Algae Production
- Work with Production Manager to monitor production targets according to commercial contracts and customer demand
- Coordinate and perform activities to maintain productive cultures within product specifications at 4.0 acre prototype farm, working directly with algae production staff
- Lead algae production team supply inventory planning at the prototype farm, ensuring the team has the necessary supplies to perform its work at all times
Responsibilities: Team Development & Leadership
- Work with Algae Production Manager to create daily production plans, assign tasks to individual team members, and report out to leadership team on what was accomplished each day
- Develop a formal training program and lead training of new algae production technicians who care for the algae on a daily basis
- Collaborate with Maintenance Supervisor to maintain facilities in working condition, ensuring biosecurity equipment is maintained and working areas are kept clean, enabling efficiency during production
Responsibilities: Continuous Improvement
- Working with R&D and Design Team, collect feedback from algae production team, identifying improvements to existing processes and equipment to improve user experience and overall productivity
- Develop plans and execute inclusion of Operational R&D changes into the production system to continuously improve algae production metrics, including new equipment, nutrient regimes, and processes
Experience & Abilities
- Previous crop production management experience with algae (ideally macroalgae)
- 1+ year of experience managing aquaculture production teams
- Outstanding knowledge and understanding of algal biology, aquaculture systems, and appropriate biosecurity protocols for growing macroalgae
- Ability to work with and around chemicals such as bleach and acid, following all safety guidelines including passing a respirator fit test
- Excellent driving record with ability to operate an electric golf cart on uneven terrain
- Experience working with and managing contractors in construction, plumbing and electrical desired but not required
- Experience in high growth companies / start-ups desired but not required
