About the Role:
The primary function of the Seedling Production Supervisor is to work with the Nursery Manager and Nursery Director to administer the seedling germination program, as laid out by the Nursery Director.
This role will work closely with the Nursery Manager, Seed Production Manager, Breeding Director and Nursery Director to both improve operations in the short term, but also to assist in the development of long-term strategy related to the seedling germination program.
What You'll Do
- Interface with vendors related to the sourcing and integration of commercial automated seed sowing equipment
- Assist in the planning and execution phases for all of the annual seed sowing cycles
- Inventory management for the company’s seed catalogue
- Organize the labor needs and scheduling for all production sowing cycles
- Coordinate upgrades and improvements to the seed germination infrastructure
- Setup/maintenance of the automated seed sowing line
- Management/maintenance of the seedling crop which includes plant health, fertigation, data collection/processing/management, nutrient management and equipment maintenance
- Work with the Nursery Director and Director of Engineering to help identify emerging greenhouse technology and follow up throughout the bid/proposal and procurement process
- Work with the Nursery Manager, Seed Production Supervisor, Seed Production Manager and Nursery Director to help drive process improvement and eliminate waste as part of the broader corporate continuous improvement initiatives
- Cleaning and sanitation of work areas.
- Quality Control of the seedling crops
- Participate in the IPM program and work with the Plant Health Coordinator, IPM Supervisor and Seed Production Supervisor to discuss strategies for improving and maintaining overall plant health
- Assist in evaluating current greenhouse cultivation methodologies/equipment and suggest changes to processes or upgrades to hardware/equipment when applicable
- Train and lead entry level employees on department SOPs and industry best practices
Qualifications:
What You'll Need to Have
- 5-10 year’s experience in a commercial greenhouse environment
- Demonstrated experience with team leadership and basic personnel management
- Computer literacy and familiarity with information management systems and MS office.
- Ability to communicate respectfully and professionally with a range of team members, collaborators and outside contractors.
- Manage time effectively to meet deadlines and time sensitive tasks.
- Fluency in English is required; Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
- Applicants must be eligible to work in the US.
- Knowledge of conventional and organic farming practices.
- Ability to develop key relationships internally and externally and focus on project details.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and multiple projects.
- Ability to travel (less than 20%)
- Understanding of greenhouse physical infrastructure systems, both with commercially available systems as well as emerging product lines
