Roku Developer XMG has a portfolio of over two dozen streaming and broadcast channels, each in its own specific niche or micro-niche and ranging from sports, cannabis, music, children’s entertainment, fitness, horror, to many others.
Our XMG App Development team is looking for a Roku Developer to join the team. You will step into an integral role to assist with maintaining the XMG Roku apps. We need someone to bring previous experience working with complex Roku codebases, writing idiomatic BrightScript, and someone who adheres to best practices to ensure delivery of stable and reliable app releases.
Please possess experience with Redux, SceneGraph, or other Roku APIs Familiarity with the Roku ecosystem, including capabilities, limitations, and best practices across devices Experience with React Native, Flutter, or using web technologies on any non-browser platform Development experience with video playback, cross-device interoperability (e.g. casting), or other 10-foot, connected TV platforms in general (e.g. Roku, FireTV, Android TV, Apple TV, or Smart TVs)
A strong candidate has:
- Strong knowledge of Android SDK, different versions of Android, and how to deal with different screen sizes
- Ability to create Android module/library and integrate third party SDKs and libraries
- Ability to build our SDK for the Roku platform.
- 1+ Yrs. experience in Application development using Roku SDK, Bright script, Roku Debugging tools.
- Proficiency in understanding of code versioning tools and continues integrations
- Ability to develop apps published on the Roku channel store.
Responsibilities:
- Roku software development using Brightscript and the Scene Graph framework.
- Understand the limitations of Roku platform and understand how to optimize the app to improve performance
- Work and collaborate in teams with developers, testers, product managers, etc.
- Work in an Agile, iterative development process
- Familiar with Jira, Confluence tools and communicate tasking estimation and progress regularly to a project manager, Scrum Master
- Be capable of committing to deliver timely results.
- Contribute to the Fox News and Fox Business Roku codebase
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and ship new features
- Document code in a clear and concise manner
- Identify and address technical debt
- Implement new Roku APIs/features
- Adding and updating UI elements and screens
- Monitor and improve app performance
- Review and approve code changes from other developers
- Lead by example through coding, this is a hands-on engineering role
- Write clean, concise, readable code that follows common design patterns and best engineering practices
- Complete work with a conscientious attitude and good follow-through
- Raise the overall quality of engineering through code reviews, tech talks, pair programming and other collaborative practices
- Stay informed with changes in technology and propose new processes and technologies to the team
Requirements:
- 3+ years as a Roku developer and strong programming language and scripting skills
- Proficiency with BrightScript and Scene Graph Framework
- Deeply understand threads in Scene Graph and how to optimize rendezvous between task thread and render thread
- Familiar with Roku native UI components like rowlist, markuplist and markupGrid
- Familiar with Video Node in Roku and an understanding of how to debug streaming related issues. * Strong Roku debugging skills
- At least 2 years leading teams in analyzing business problems and possible
- solutions, and in developing high-quality presentation materials.
- Quantitative analytical strengths, including Excel model development.
- Rigorous understanding and implementation of business-focused analytical approaches and frameworks.
- Comfortable prioritizing and leading multiple initiatives and analyses, and in moving with speed through each.
- Excellent leadership and influencing skills, and an ability to set a vision and motivate multi-functional teams towards a common outcome.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including executing hands-on analytics analysis, and developing quality presentation materials.
- Extremely proficient in Java and/or Kotlin
- Familiar with the Android ecosystem including feature sets and best practices across devices and operating system versions
- Mobile development experience
- For technical experience, if you have created a few scenegraph apps with video and a back end API, using JSON and XML before, and have referenced the Roku SDK online pages a lot, and you know how to pass values between components, observers, file read operations, minor animation work and video playback with token authentication and DRM
- Some experience with Roku Pay, subscriptions, upgrade/downgrade, current Roku certification requirements, beacons, task/thread rendezvous, and
- a general understanding or experience with roku packages
Nice to have:
- Experience with video playback
- Experience with or interest in Android-based set-top box platforms (Fire TV, Android TV, etc)
- Experience with GraphQL-based APIs
- Experience with TV Integration Framework
- Experience with cross-device interoperability (e.g. casting)
- Experience building multi-modal experiences
Education:
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer or Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
