Job Title: Laboratory - Microbiolgist I Job
Job Description:
The Division of Laboratory Services at the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) is seeking a qualified individual to fill a Microbiologist I position to support the Dairy, Meat, and Utah Medical Cannabis programs. The incumbant will work in an ISO 17025 accredited Dairy Testing Laboratory and help bring the meat and cannabis testing laboratories under the scope of the ISO accreditaion. The ideal applicant will have a bachelor's degree in microbiology and knowledge of FDA PMO. However, individuals with bachelor’s degrees in biology or chemistry and some microbiological laboratory experience are encouraged to apply. We are looking for an individual with outstanding integrity, is detail-oriented, and has exceptional interpersonal communication skills. In the dairy testing laboratory, pasteurized and raw milk and Grade A Dairy Products are tested to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations. Routine Analyses performed include testing for: total bacteria and coliforms, milk inhibitors and antibiotics, somatic cells, alkaline phosphatase, fat and protein levels in milk products, added water in milk, and dairy water testing. Meat and cannabis testing will primarily involve the use of PCR and plating techniques.
Pursuant to Utah Code §§ 4-41-107 and 26-61a-111, this job includes duties that arise from or directly relate to the Utah Medical Cannabis Act. Duties may require conduct which is in violation of the criminal laws of the United States with respect to the manufacture, sale, or distribution of cannabis. Principal Duties As a Microbiologist I, you will:
- Work under the direction of senior laboratory staff.
- Conduct microbiological tests and evaluate results.
- Perform procedures to prepare the sample for analysis, including grinding, weighing, and diluting samples.
- Maintain detailed records of laboratory procedures and analysis results.
- Perform essential laboratory housekeeping functions, including temperature tracking, solution preparation, data entry, and cleaning.
- Follow established laboratory practices, procedures, and safety guidelines Help maintain laboratory equipment Interpret, explain, and apply agency policies and procedures, business practices, federal or state laws, regulations, etc.
- Generate reports and findings, and defend analytical work during hearings or litigation.
- Review data, records, and files for detail and accuracy.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, regulations, agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc.
- Develop or modify rules, policies, standards, and procedures Audit dairies in the State of Utah. Work with foodborne pathogens.
The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate has:
- Experience conducting microbiological testing including plate counting, PCR, ID/AST testing, etc.
- A bachelor’s degree in microbiology.
- Proficiency in performing basic calculations for preparing precise solution concentrations and sample dilutions.
- Advanced knowledge of common office software and data systems.
- The ability to effectively manage their own time and the time of others.
- The ability to follow established SOPs.
- Strong communication skills. Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
Other Necessary Requirements
The candidate must:
- Have a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, biology, biochemistry or a related field.
- Have advanced knowledge of chemistry and microbiology safety and terminolog.
- Have a current driver’s license.
- Have a safe driving record.
- Be capable of driving a motor vehicle for extended periods of time. Be able to work while sitting or standing.
- Be able to lift 50 lbs.

This is a senior level job. An Environmental Health Scientist III inspects the largest and most complex food, dairy and industrial hemp facilities; assists in the planning, coordination, and implementation of a food, dairy and industrial hemp compliance program. Reviews state and federally regulated food, dairy and industrial hemp industry facilities and advises others on the interpretation and enforcement of laws. Performs inspections and investigations involving a high degree of independent judgment, assures the reconditioning, removal or destruction of condemned products, and prepares cases and court actions. These activities include essential food safety and public health protection responsibilities. Maintains liaison with federal and local agencies and gives talks and lectures to interested parties. May serve as the agency's subject matter expert in one or more areas of specialty, such as, meat, shellfish, dairy and industrial hemp etc. Provides support to other staff within the department.

The Medical Cannabis and Industrial Hemp Division at the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) are seeking a qualified individual to fill a Compliance Inspector position. The incumbent will function as a field representative of the division and will primarily be responsible for performing inspections of cannabis & hemp cultivation sites, processing facilities, and retail locations, to enforce regulations set by the State of Utah and provide technical leadership. Inspectors monitor agricultural policy and certify compliance with program regulations. Inspectors need to have outstanding integrity, extreme attention to detail, and exceptional interpersonal communication skills. This job will require you to understand and clearly communicate laws and rules to individuals participating in the legal sale of cannabis and hemp products in the State of Utah. This will include reviewing product labels of hemp and cannabis commodities for compliance and issuing a notice of violations of the law, a notice of violation, and/or stop-sale notices.
Inspectors will:
- Promote responsible agricultural production and commerce.
- Provides technical leadership in their area of specialty.
- Comply with the requirements of due process.
- Prepare compliance violations.
- Implement administrative controls. Federal and State licensure may be required for each program.

The Medical Cannabis and Industrial Hemp Division at the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) are seeking a qualified individual to fill a Compliance Inspector position. The incumbent will function as a field representative of the division and will primarily be responsible for performing inspections of cannabis & hemp cultivation sites, processing facilities, and retail locations, to enforce regulations set by the State of Utah and provide technical leadership. Inspectors monitor agricultural policy and certify compliance with program regulations. Inspectors need to have outstanding integrity, extreme attention to detail, and exceptional interpersonal communication skills. This job will require you to understand and clearly communicate laws and rules to individuals participating in the legal sale of cannabis and hemp products in the State of Utah. Job Description:
The Division of Laboratory Services at the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food is seeking a qualified individual for a Chemist/Microbiologist II position to perform chemical and microbiological analyses on cannabis and cannabis containing products as required by Utah law. This position may also be involved with the analysis of other agriculture-related sample types to support the regulatory mission of the department.
Pursuant to Utah Code §§ 4-41-107 and 26-61a-111, this job includes duties that arise from or directly relate to the Utah Medical Cannabis Act. Duties may require conduct which is in violation of the criminal laws of the United States with respect to the manufacture, sale, or distribution of cannabis. Principal Duties
As a Chemist/Microbiologist II, you will:
- Utilize laboratory instrumentation (e.g., LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, HPLC, ICP-MS) to perform chemical analyses on cannabis (medical cannabis and hemp) samples to determine cannabinoid composition and contaminant levels, including pesticide residues, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and residual solvents.
- Perform sample preparation and microbial analysis of cannabis samples by PCR and traditional microbiological methods.
- Prepare and analyze various types of cannabis samples (flower, concentrates, oils, etc.); interpret results and generate reports.
- Maintain technical data; review data records and files for detail and accuracy.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, agency rules, standards and guidelines.
- Review and/or inspect work for quality, accuracy and completeness.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Experience working in a laboratory setting; experience and background in chemical and microbiological analysis is preferred.
- Experience with PCR and/or traditional microbiological methods (e.g., plating) and familiarity with aseptic technique.
- Demonstrated ability to perform analytical testing methods using LC-MS/MS, LC-DAD, and ICP-MS.
- Strong background in sample preparation methods for complex matrices.
- Experience working in a regulated laboratory environment (e.g., ISO, GLP).
- Strong communication and chemistry specific technical writing skills.
- Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work and thrive in a team environment.
Preference
- Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, or closely related field.
