Position Purpose:
To provide analytical chemistry and quality assurance support to both internal and external projects. External projects include national and homeland security programs with a focus on CBRNe collection and analysis efforts along with Cannabis proficiency testing programs. This role will include approximately 35% laboratory work, 35% desk work, and ~30% travel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan and implement chemical analysis proficiency tests for methods such as GC/MS, FTIR, LC-MS/MS, HPLC-UV, and RAMAN; activities include developing of proficiency test plans, performing laboratory pilot testing, preparing and verifying proficiency test samples, and packaging samples for shipment
- Perform laboratory activities related to the preparation and verification of proficiency test samples
- Lab work will include creation of standards/spiking mixes, sample creation, sample extraction/dilution, and sample analysis using techniques such as gas chromatograph mass spectrometry (GC/MS), liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), high performance liquid chromatography - ultraviolet (HPLC-UV), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)
- Maintain laboratory equipment and laboratory records
- Evaluate proficiency test data, provide input and review of technical reports, identify data trends and other issues
- Lead or assist with the validation and/or verification of new methods
- Assist client laboratories in preparing for external ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation audits and attend the audits as an advocate for the client laboratory.
- Provide feedback and help prepare on auditee corrective actions packets for submission to the accreditation body
- Contribute to the development and revision of internal and external quality documents, most of which are based on the ISO/IEC 17025 or ISO/IEC 17043 standards
- Provide ISO/IEC 17025 or training on other quality topics to clients
- Perform internal audits of Signature Science systems and procedures against relevant internal or external standards, including audits of the Signature Science Proficiency Test Program and Analytical Laboratory Program against the requirements of ISO/IEC 17043 and ISO/IEC 17025, respectively
- May regularly communicate with external laboratory staff to help resolve QA, PT, or other quality-related issues
- May serve as a task leader on one or more projects
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Analytical chemistry skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proactive, self-starter
- Ability to multitask and ensure accurate and timely submission of project deliverables
- Knowledge of GC/MS, LC-MS/MS, HPLC-UV, and/or FTIR techniques preferred
- Basic understanding of ISO/IEC 17025 and/or ISO/IEC 17043 standards preferred
- Laboratory quality assurance experience including auditing and procedure development preferred
- Willingness to obtain the American Society of Quality (ASQ) Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) certification within two years of hire date
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor degree (or higher) in chemistry or related field
- 2 - 7 years of experience performing analytical chemistry lab work
- Experience providing quality assurance support to analytical chemistry programs desired
- Experience performing audits desired
- Experience assessing data for trends desired
Certificates and Licenses:
Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) certification must be obtained within 2 years from date of hire.
Clearance:
Candidate must be able to obtain a Secret level security clearance.

- Ability to work in varying conditions to include:
- Traditional office environments with sedentary extended periods required for voluminous data analysis via office automation (combination of onsite and remote work);
- Climate controlled laboratory environments requiring extended periods of standing when performing laboratory analyses, or during audits and SOP observation;
- Mobile laboratories, subject to wide ranges of temperature and humidity requiring extended periods of standing, stooping or kneeling in confined spaces;
- Conference rooms, classrooms, or theaters that involve extended periods of standing for training delivery or command briefings; and
- Outdoors in various weather and lighting conditions including heat, humidity, cold, snow, bright sun, and dark night.
- Exposure to various chemical and biological materials associated with an analytical lab or facility.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, coats or gowns, shoe cover, tyvek coveralls, safety glasses, respirators, and/or PAPRs.
- Subject to medical monitoring based on lab functions.
- Candidate must be willing to travel up to 50% of the time.
