POLITICO is looking for an entrepreneurial editor to help lead our state capital and Washington-based education and cannabis policy and political coverage. State coverage is a vital part of POLITICO’s global news operation, and we’re looking for someone who can help us be the go-to destination for policy and political reporting in a growing number of the most influential states, cities and federal policy areas. This editor must exhibit excellent news judgment and have the ability to guide both reporters and editors to produce high-impact journalism.
What You’ll Do:
- Work closely with the Managing Editor of POLITICO’s states coverage, the department’s other Deputy Editor and the editors of each of the teams to plan, coordinate and edit our coverage for subscribers and for a national audience.
- Work with editors and reporters to conceive and execute enterprise projects and a steady stream of homepage lead stories.
- Coordinate coverage among the bureaus and our federal policy teams, balancing the needs of several niche professional audiences and POLITICO’s large consumer audience.
What You’ll Need:
- Significant experience editing policy, legislative and/or political coverage at the state or national level.
- Strong writing and editing skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced newsroom.
- Excellent communication skills, and the ability to work and coordinate with editors and reporters in different cities.
- Proven experience as a manager and the ability to work effectively with teams based remotely.
- Rigorous commitment to nonpartisan journalism.

POLITICO is seeking a deputy editor to help lead its California team, an enterprising group of journalists covering the policies and politics of the largest U.S. state whose influence is slated to grow with the new Biden administration. We’re looking for someone with a track record of delivering scoops about the Legislature and the state’s agencies. From breaking news to deep-dive investigative stories, the job will provide a range of challenges and opportunities for the right person to shine.
What you’ll do:
- Work closely with the California editor and a talented team of reporters to set coverage priorities, edit stories for all POLITICO platforms and develop new strategies to deliver content to an audience of top policy makers and power players.
- Work with the team to deliver hard-hitting accountability journalism on the policy and politics of one of the most influential states and the Newsom administration, which is of interest to our state and national audiences.
- Edit a mix of full-length articles and short pieces, both breaking news and enterprise, plus newsletters.
- Work with other editors across the newsroom to identify and produce stories with broader reach that connect the dots among the world’s power centers.
What you'll need:
- Expert knowledge of the California legislative process and state regulators that write rules for our key policy areas – cannabis, education, energy, environment, health and tech.
- Experience working collaboratively and creatively with a motivated team of high-metabolism reporters
- Strong management skills and an active, hands-on approach to editing
- Experience breaking news on policy and/or working with reporters to tell policy stories
- Polished writing and editing skills
- Ability to juggle tight deadlines and a demanding schedule
- A rigorous commitment to fair-minded, nonpartisan journalism
- Experience working on campaign coverage, including managing daily coverage of competitive political races and tracking campaign finance data.

The editor will lead an ambitious team of reporters covering Florida politics and state policymaking in health care, education, energy, environment and regulated industries including cannabis. If the editor is not based in Tallahassee, she or he must be able to travel there regularly during post-pandemic times, particularly during the Florida legislative session.
