Longwood Gardens is seeking a full-time Aquatics Grower and Conservatory Horticulturist. They will join the Conservatory Team, managing Longwood’s world-renown indoor displays of over 1000 different seasonal crops and numerous permanent taxa, in one of the nation’s largest conservatories. Responsibilities include:
- Caring and curating waterlilies and other aquatic plants.
- Working in conjunction with our current Aquatics Curator, learning all skills necessary to design and maintain our current waterlily and aquatics display.
- Mentoring students and volunteers; and daily interaction with the public.
- Supporting seasonal and permanent conservatory-display installations and maintenance
- Assisting other Horticulturists and Growers throughout the organization.
- Ordering greenhouse supplies as well as receiving and unloading plants.
Longwood’s collection of Nymphaea is nationally accredited by the American Public Garden- Plant Collections Network, and the institution continues to grow and hybridize Victoria species, pollinating and producing seeds of Victoria ‘Longwood Hybrid’ for our own display pools as well as distribution to many gardens around the world.
Further, the upcoming Longwood Reimagined project includes the renovation of The Waterlily Courtyard and expanded aquatics displays in and around the new West Conservatory.
We are looking for a candidate with experience in growing and maintaining aquatic gardens, with an emphasis on waterlilies and water platters. The ideal candidate will have:
- A Bachelor of Science in horticulture with an ornamental-horticulture emphasis.
- Working knowledge of greenhouse plants, environmental controls, and irrigation.
- Strong organizational and communication skills with experience working in a team.
- A valid driver’s license and willingness to obtain: a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license; forklift operator’s training certificate; and aerial lift training.
- Occasional evening, night, weekend, and holiday work is required for this position.

Longwood Gardens is seeking a Floriculture Head Grower to lead the floriculture team and manage the production planning of the notable and iconic seasonal plants featured in our indoor and outdoor displays. Additional responsibilities include:
- Directing all aspects of the seasonal crop production process including management, budgeting, defining crop culture requirements, planning space utilization, plant sourcing, and customizing production schedules using our crop database.
- Overseeing contractually grown plant production.
- Leading the coordination and communication across Floriculture Production and Display Design teams to ensure that timelines and design specifications are consistently met.

We seek a motivating leader inspired by growing plants in extraordinary ways with extensive experience in floriculture production and crop planning, combined with a background growing a diverse range of high-quality floriculture crops in different growing environments. The ideal candidate will have:
- A Bachelors’ Degree in Horticulture or correlative floriculture production experience
- A minimum of 5 years of growing a diversity of floriculture crops across a range of finished specifications within a public garden or horticulture operation.
- Excellent verbal communication and strong interpersonal skills
- Experience leading, training, mentoring and guiding staff, students, and volunteers.
- Proficiency in scheduling crops and working with production planning systems.
- Expertise across a wide range of greenhouse designs and systems technology

Longwood Gardens is seeking a full-time Greenhouse Grower to join our team of growers, producing over 1000 unique florist crops, in 4.5 acres of greenhouses and container fields, used to create Longwood’s world-renown displays. This is a unique hands-on position requiring attention to detail. Specific responsibilities include:
- Managing and maintaining a large stock plant collection, which includes over 200 cultivars of exhibition style Chrysanthemums.
- Supporting plant propagator by ensuring cuttings are ready to be harvested on time and in the correct quantities, assisting with plant propagation, and managing propagation space in the greenhouse.
- Leading all aspects of IPM management in assigned area.
- Supporting all aspects of crop production including transplanting, potting, repotting, staking, tying, grooming, watering, fertilizing and pest management.
- Setting environmental control parameters
- Receiving and delivering plant material.
- Working with other areas of Greenhouse Production, enabling them to become well versed in all aspects of Longwood’s high standards for producing beautiful display plants.

- A valid driver’s license.

- All aspects of crop production including staking, tying, pinching/pruning, sowing seed, sticking cuttings, potting, watering, fertilizing, soil mixing and irrigation maintenance.
- Assisting with the upkeep and cleanliness of work areas.
- Grooming plants as they are prepared for display throughout the gardens.
- Assisting with maintaining our orchid display, drawing from a collection of over 6,000 orchids representing over 2,000 different kinds.
- Transporting potted plants to and from growing areas.
- Working with and around trucks, lift gates, forklifts, and utility vehicles.
The successful candidates will be effective working as part of a team as well as independently. This position requires the ability to work in all weather conditions, lift at least 50lbs, sit, stand, walk for long periods of time and carry items as needed to complete assigned tasks. Longwood Gardens is seeking a full-time Floriculture Grower-Propagator who will join 11 other growers, producing over 1000 unique florist crops, in 4.5 acres of greenhouses and container fields, used to create Longwood’s world-renown displays. The Grower-Propagator will oversee vegetative and seed propagation for the Floriculture team including about 350 crop varieties as well as crop production in 6,000 square feet of greenhouses. This Grower-Propagator will be involved in all aspects of crop production including: transplanting, potting, repotting, staking, tying, grooming, watering, fertilizing, receiving and delivering plant material. In addition, this individual will supervise and mentor students, seasonal employees, and volunteers in proper greenhouse propagation and growing techniques. Periodic weekend, holiday, and evening duty is required.
We are looking for a candidate who has a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience working in a greenhouse setting involving plant propagation. A degree in horticulture with an emphasis on Floriculture is a plus, but not required. The successful candidate will have strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills and will be effective working as part of a team as well as independently. This individual must possess a valid driver’s license and be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license and a forklift operator’s training certificate.
