Looking for the right person to be a member of our team in a new and exciting emerging area in New Jersey setting up and operating a Cannabis Testing Laboratory. A great position to be a part of a team from the ground floor.
Summary: Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Science Officer (CSO) will serve as the corporate technical and science advisor, develop and oversee Lab operations, and be a key member of the Executive Leadership Team. The CSO is responsible for managing the company’s scientific, technological, and research operations, while ensuring the company’s commitment to the cannabis industry and the environment. Working with the leadership team, the CSO will define and implement the technology strategies across the suite of services and ensure that the teams, technology and systems are able to deliver on the Lab’s promises. The CSO possesses and leverages his or her expertise and credibility to inform and influence, leads activities on cannabis, provide insights for the proper procedures for handling samples to be tested, and reporting results to the sampled cultivators and/or processors. The CSO shall be responsible for training and oversight supervision of all laboratory staff and for ensuring that the laboratory achieves and maintains quality standards of practice.
RESPONSIBILITIES
· Plan and execute operational strategies to deliver services and improve the organization's position within the industry
o Develop Standard Operating Procedures that include the following methods of analysis:
· Methods established in accordance with "Cannabis Inflorescence: Standards of Identity, Analysis, and Quality Control" (2014) monograph published by the "American Herbal Pharmacopoeia" or alternative methods that have been reviewed and approved by the State of New Jersey
o Acquire analytical instruments and assure they are properly qualified and calibrated to ensure the highest accuracy in testing quality
o Develop specific testing procedures that may include, but is not limited to the following:
· Cannabinoid testing and content (CBC, CBD, CBDa, CBG, CBN, THC, THCa, THCv, etc.)
· Terpene profile
· Pesticides/fungicides/plant growth regulators
· Residual solvents
· Heavy metals
· Microbiological contaminants (mold, insects, bacteria, etc.)
· Water activity
o Take appropriate steps to obtain Lab accreditation to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard
o Proactively identifies need for analysis of potential safety issue - communicates results of analysis to CEO
o Advises in business critical, high risk or high visibility issues; provides authoritative opinion; anticipates challenges and poses unasked questions; may request additional investigation; provides critical review at all phases
o Responds to situations involving cannabis complaints; communicates with confidence to the CEO, relevant parties, and outside entities as needed
o Oversees strategic research projects developing new processes/technologies
o Champion the launch of new capabilities and services with responsibility for analytical method research, development, and validation
· Lead a team of talented scientists and Lab Techs, growing top talent and attracting top scientific talent
o Responsible for training and oversight supervision of all laboratory staff and for ensuring that the laboratory achieves and maintains quality standards of practice; provide technical and strategic direction to the Lab team
· Develop confidence in clients/prospective clients as a laboratory that performs high quality testing with reliable and accurate test results
· Serve as the thought leader in cannabis testing, representing the organization at local and regional trade shows, seminars, presentations and speaking engagements
· Attend and participate in professional group meetings or continued education activities; staying abreast of new trends and innovations in analytical science
· Serve as a key advisor in leadership meetings
REQUIREMENTS:
· Doctorate degree in chemical, environmental, or biological sciences from an accredited college or university and two years of post-degree laboratory experience; or
· A master's degree in chemical, environmental, or biological sciences from an accredited college or university and four years of post-degree laboratory experience
· Ph.D. strongly preferred
· Highly accomplished scientific leader with a passion for research and a desire to make an impact beyond the lab
· Extensive (solid-state) analytical materials characterization and method development
· 10+ years of Management experience in a Certified Laboratory
· Highly skilled and experienced in botanical extractions (Ethanol, crude, distillate, isolate, chromatography)
· Exposure to a fast pace/deadline related environment is preferred.
· Experience complying with cGMP standards
· Excellent critical thinking skills to be able to troubleshoot any issue with the processes and instrumentation.
· A strong understanding of cannabis extractions or similar products
· Collaborative team player, comfortable leading as well as executing projects
· Driven leader, comfortable in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, high-energy environment, able to meet multiple deadlines
· Ability to mentor and grow scientific talent
· Excellent interpersonal, verbal, managerial, and written communication skills
$150-225k, plus equity and benefits

Pay: $150,000.00 - $225,000.00 per year
