About the job:
We have a current opening for an independent contractor (1099) in the role of an Accounting Associate. We offer a flexible work schedule and continued opportunities to expand your knowledge and skillset in our specialized sectors. The nature of recent assignments has created the need for an individual based in the Denver metro who will be able to go on site at the client location in downtown Denver approximately once per month.
Basic Function:
The Accountant role plays a critical component in ensuring efficient flow of money, the lifeblood of any company. What you’ll be doing:
- Keeping our clients’ General Ledgers humming along beautifully with skill, efficiency and competence
- Contributing to a culture of fiscal responsibility infused with creative problem solving
- Playing an active role in financial reporting, capital formation, revenue recognition, risk management and contract administration
- Helping prepare financial statements, budgets, cash flow analysis, and periodic ad hoc reports
- Tracking and complying with service agreements, contracts and external vendor relationships that we need to run the business
- Directly or indirectly working with C-level executives of the client companies
- Stretching yourself professionally by jumping into unfamiliar territory whenever necessary
- Participating in regularly scheduled meetings with members of the Focused Eneregy staff
- Collaborating in the resolution of business issues to propel the organization forward
- Joining a team of like-minded and experienced professionals intent upon flawless execution
- Leading by example to provide value to the clients we serve
- Communicating and sharing best practices to aid in continuous improvement of the team
- Participating in periodic performance reviews to provide constructive and developmental feedback
- Providing valuable insights to help improve the general operations of Focused Energy
- Meeting deadlines and delivering work that is completed in a thorough and professional manner
Principal Responsibilities:
- Prepare and enter journal entries for Billing, A/R, A/P, and General Ledger Management
- Record proper allocations to ensure the financials and trial balance are accurate and complete
- Support month-end and year-end close process
- Prepare monthly financial reports and review for errors and inconsistencies
- Monthly reconciliation of cash, credit, and accrual accounts
- Prepare regulatory reporting, both internal and external
- Research technical accounting issues for compliance with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
- Assist team in documenting business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls

- Bachelors’ degree in Accounting or Finance
- Experience with or exposure to the following systems: o Excel o QuickBooks Online o Bill.com o Xero
- Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures and US GAAP
- Extensive experience with creating financial statements
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, project management and communication skills
- Experience with SaaS companies is a plus

Finance and Leadership
- You will act as a strategic partner with the leadership of companies. Understand the mission of the business, the industry and align the financial budgets and forecasts with the goals. Build out financial models for operation use, fundraising, and cash flow management.
- Analyzing company's financial results with respect to profits, trends, costs, and compliance with budgets. Meet with leadership to review results.
- Providing strategic guidance around capital financing options to support company growth needs.
- Review pitch decks and assist with the financial aspects of data rooms.
- Developing and coordinating all relationships with lending/financial institutions.
- Interacting with investors, venture capital partners, and board of directors.
- Coordinating, preparing, and reviewing ad hoc, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
- Managing short-term and long-term cash flow.
Accounting
- Directing all aspects of accounting operations, overseeing all transactions related to the general ledger, receivables, payables, payroll, and financial reporting.
- Developing and maintaining all necessary accounting policies and systems, including general ledger and financial reporting. Ensuring that records are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. Oversee accounting team members.
- Conversion of accounting records to GAAP accounting, readiness for audits, or due diligence.
- Managing tax planning and compliance with all required federal, state, local, payroll, property, and other applicable taxes.
Management
- Managing client's engagements including scheduling and managing staff, following outlined Scope of Work and managing the team on budgets.

Qualifications
- 7-10 plus years of financial and accounting management experience.
- Experience working with high growth companies or start-up businesses. Industry experience in Saas, CPG, or Services.
- Recent experience scaling a finance operation in a leadership role.
- Experience with fundraising, equity transactions, merger or acquisition preferred.
- Experience with managing Cap Tables, stock options, and 409(a) valuations a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business. CPA and/or CMA preferred but not required.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with fluctuating priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to work without direct supervision, and efficiently manage people, tasks, and time.
