TASK/PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Able to comprehend and apply directions from the R&D Manager
- Asks questions of the R&D Manager for clarity when necessary

- Aids in the upkeep of both the facility and equipment

- Trained as an irrigator 1 and 2, sprayer 1 and 2, Grower Assistant, and System Administrator within the first 3 months of employment
- Able to work in a communicative/team-oriented manner in a fast paced environment
- Familiar with computers, Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- Create task list for the week. Able to complete other departmental tasks as required.
- Work in collaboration with the R&D Manager to set priorities for the week
- Create Data Collection Sheets for trials, follow production growing protocols
- Collect data of active trials.
- Coordinate photography for active trials with the R&D photographer.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Able to measure fertilizer and pesticides and instruct sprayers how to apply them.
- Able to be contacted for questions or concerns by staff and management on and off of schedule in emergencies
- Aids in developing and monitoring safe practices within the department and supports the Costa safety program
- Reports maintenance issues to management and maintenance through the SharePoint ticket system
- Provides input to the System Admin that facilitates in the editing and the maintaining assemblies in propagation
- Monitors and helps facilitate facility and equipment upkeep
- Completes a SAM2 training course and can train on it within the first 3 months of employment
- Works closely with the System Admin
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS/SPECIALIZED SKILLS
- Acquires a Florida issued private applicator's license
- Successful passing grade on the 5 Levels of Moisture Management training and can train on the topic within the first 3 months of employment
- Understands how to operate the booms, EC/pH/Light meters, preform copper/Sanidate testing, and can train on the topic within the first 3 months of employment
- Able to identify common crop insects, diseases, and plant stresses and train on this topic within the first 3 months
- Utilizes reports from the System Admin and other departments on pH, EC, Copper, Sanidate, Soil EC, Live Goods Loss Analysis, Pre-Assignments, and other data through the use of SharePoint to drive the department on fact based decision making within the first 3 months of employment
- Able to identify and direct the application of irrigation that is appropriate for the temperature, time of day, genus, cloud cover, etc.
- Has 1-3 years on the job experience in horticulture or agriculture or recent degree in related field
- Manage crop fertility program and Integrated Pest Management by monitoring lab results and selecting best practices as directed by the R&D Manager
- Bilingual is preferred

Section Assistant Grower Responsibilities
Growing
- Manage daily crop care (watering, drenching, spraying) efforts to maximize production and ensure proper techniques and sequence of tasks to benefit crop growth.
- In concert with the grower, manage all aspects of the Horticulture processes and procedures in your assigned area, including but not limited to; propagation, fertilization, irrigation, chemical application, plant maintenance and other crop needs on a daily basis.
Tasks
- Responsible for planning, scheduling and coordinating with plant maintenance supervisor/spread move supervisor all crop care tasks (pinch/trim, spread/move/hang) in assigned areas
- Manage inventory of daily use tools and supplies for crop care workers. Investigate and implement more effective tools while keeping costs controlled.
- Assist in crop maintenance tasks, as needed, by pinching, trimming, shearing, and cleaning in conjuncture with the grower and the planning department.
IPM
- Working with Integrated Pest Management team, share responsibility for scouting for pests, disease, beneficial mites / insects, and pest/disease control, Monitor pests and manage bio control.
Documentation / Record Keeping for CCS / Trials
- Recording and reporting all data required to the supervisor, make sure all data are recorded and kept according to the requirements.
- Record and report inputs like water, feed, PGR, on all crops for all stages from the beginning to the end of the crop cycle.
- Document, assist and consult with Grower with various trials being performed in the greenhouse, along with interpretation of weekly recordings of important plant measurements.
Regulatory / CPS / Protocols / Processes
- Ensure that the activities within your area adhere to all corporate, site, and regulatory protocols and processes.
- Adherence to all applicable CPS processes.
- Support all CPS activates and be a very active participant in all CPS activities and processes.
- Travel to other farm locations on occasion
- Lead morning meetings, update meeting board, ensure proper communication between teams
- Responsible to make sure that the area under your responsibility is in compliance with WPS practices at all times.
- Responsible to make sure that the standard chemical application signs are filled out consistently and correctly, and are in place during the required re-entry interval
Sanitation / Upkeep
- Ensure greenhouse cleanliness and sanitation within designated greenhouse areas
- Keeping and maintaining the sanitation standards in your area of responsibility according to the protocol.
- Responsible for housekeeping, sanitation and weed control for your area at all times.
Equipment Maintenance and Upkeep
- Assist Grower with general upkeep of assigned section.
- Perform CILs for tools used in the area of responsibility each day, making sure that all necessary structures and equipment are in order and functioning at all times.
- Be able to maintain or fix some minor technical problems in your area of responsibility.
- Ensure that all booms, solenoids, valves, rain birds, basket watering systems, and filters are maintained and working according to the protocol.
- Responsible for ensuring that employees use equipment appropriately and maintain equipment in good working order
Fertigation / pH / EC
- Responsible for fertilizer stock and preparation, pH/EC sampling and testing,
- Ensure all required samplings are done on time, this includes daily EC and pH measurement, weekly soil analysis for EC and pH, and media / foliar sampling for lab Analysis depending on the requirement,
- Perform consistent crop and irrigation system inspections in the field to make sure that the moisture requirement is up to the standard.
- Be able to set up the overhead irrigation and drip irrigation
Environmental Control Systems
- Monitor and adjust environmental control systems based on request from the grower and established criteria
Generic
- Average 45hrs / week

Consultants

Manage and execute tasks of overall growing and maintenance of plants to ensure proper plant growth and health, as directed by the Grower.

DESCRIPTION
Costa Farm’s Assistant Grower for Research and Development is responsible for managing and executing aspects of growing experimental annual species as directed by the Research and Development Grower and Manager
Tasks and responsibilities include:
DUTIES
- Creating a weekly list of tasks to be executed with R&D Grower

- Sticking, planting, spacing, pruning, and maintaining trial crops as instructed by the R&D Grower

- Participating in the R&D department meetings as required

Responsibilities:
- Responsible for production of annuals, foliage and/or blooming tropical crops, on time and within specifications
- Supervises assistant growers and production supervisors
- Responsible for planning and scheduling production protocols

DESCRIPTION
Costa Farms is dedicated to creating new processes, protocols and technologies as well as driving new product developments that are impactful to our company and our industry. The purpose of this role is to oversee the evaluation of new blooming tropical breeding to be introduced into production to solve horticultural and commercial needs. The position would supervise, manage, or participate in all aspects of growing and maintaining R&D trial material, which would include R&D Water Tech, R&D Sprayer, and Scouting responsibilities. This position will report directly to the R&D director.
DUTIES
- Make sure tasks assigned are completed in timely manner, without mistakes or minimum mistakes.
- Set-up trial protocols based on objectives, record results and coordinate the production of trials of alternate genetics, new products, pesticides and plant growth regulators or other chemicals to improve efficiency, profitability, product mix or consistency of products.
- Maintain organized and up to date records on active trials.
- Follow and report on all varieties as they go through all stages of the trialing process, including quarantined varieties
- Compile written reports within 14 days of trial conclusion..
- Direct the application of rates and types of fertilizers, whether slow-release or liquid, to be applied to all crops of responsibility.
- Direct the application of rates and types of pesticides to be applied to all crops of responsibility.
- Direct the application of rates and application method of all plant growth regulators to be applied to all crops of responsibility.
- Conduct and/or manage documentation of soil and/or tissue testing as required to identify pest problems, nutritional deficiencies.
- Coordinate the receipt and placement of plant materials with the Operations or Production Departments.

- Trained as an R&D irrigator, scout, and sprayer within the first 3 months of employment.

The work environment for this position may include the outdoors in full sun exposure, in a warehouse/greenhouse area, or in an office environment. This position may be required to work extended hours, weekends and holidays as required.

Tasks
- Responsible for planning, scheduling and coordinating with plant maintenance supervisor/spread move supervisor all crop care tasks (pinch/trim, spread/move/hang) in assigned areas

IPM
- Working with Integrated Pest Management team, share responsibility for scouting for pests, disease, beneficial mites / insects, and pest/disease control, Monitor pests and manage bio control.
Documentation / Record Keeping for CCS / Trials
- Recording and reporting all data required to the supervisor, make sure all data are recorded and kept according to the requirements.
- Record and report inputs like water, feed, PGR, on all crops for all stages from the beginning to the end of the crop cycle.
- Document, assist and consult with Grower with various trials being performed in the greenhouse, along with interpretation of weekly recordings of important plant measurements.
Regulatory / CPS / Protocols / Processes
- Ensure that the activities within your area adhere to all corporate, site, and regulatory protocols and processes.
- Adherence to all applicable CPS processes.
- Support all CPS activates and be a very active participant in all CPS activities and processes.
- Travel to other farm locations on occasion
- Lead morning meetings, update meeting board, ensure proper communication between teams
- Responsible to make sure that the area under your responsibility is in compliance with WPS practices at all times.
- Responsible to make sure that the standard chemical application signs are filled out consistently and correctly, and are in place during the required re-entry interval
Sanitation / Upkeep
- Ensure greenhouse cleanliness and sanitation within designated greenhouse areas
- Keeping and maintaining the sanitation standards in your area of responsibility according to the protocol.
- Responsible for housekeeping, sanitation and weed control for your area at all times.
Equipment Maintenance and Upkeep
- Assist Grower with general upkeep of assigned section.
- Perform CILs for tools used in the area of responsibility each day, making sure that all necessary structures and equipment are in order and functioning at all times.
- Be able to maintain or fix some minor technical problems in your area of responsibility.
- Ensure that all booms, solenoids, valves, rain birds, basket watering systems, and filters are maintained and working according to the protocol.
- Responsible for ensuring that employees use equipment appropriately and maintain equipment in good working order.
Fertigation / pH / EC
- Responsible for fertilizer stock and preparation, pH/EC sampling and testing,
- Ensure all required samplings are done on time, this includes daily EC and pH measurement, weekly soil analysis for EC and pH, and media / foliar sampling for lab Analysis depending on the requirement,
- Perform consistent crop and irrigation system inspections in the field to make sure that the moisture requirement is up to the standard.
- Be able to set up the overhead irrigation and drip irrigation
Environmental Control Systems
- Monitor and adjust environmental control systems based on request from the grower and established criteria

TASK/PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Properly Mix, Measure, and Apply a wide range of Pesticides, Fungicides, Herbicides, and Plant Growth Regulators
- Monitor Soil Maintenance and Environmental Factors to Evaluate, Create, and Execute Irrigation Plan.
- Scout Crops, Properly Collect samples, Identify pest(s)/disease(s), and Record Data for IPM (Integrated Pest Management) department
- Safely operate/troubleshoot Spray, Irrigation, and Sanitation Equipment: Tractor, Sprayer, Backpack Sprayer, Injector, Booms, Irrigation Lines, Irrigation Valves, Floor Sweeper, and Forklift.
- Conduct Plant Maintenance as required: Pinching, Spacing, Weeding, Grading, Black Cloth, and Netting
OTHER TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Communicate with Grower(s)/Head Grower any concerns or questions before Chemical Application
- Calculate, Mix, and Apply Liquid Fertilizers
- Correctly follow WPS throughout Mixing, Application, Clean-Up, and Disposal of chemicals
- Calculate PPM (parts per million) for various volumes of solution
- Read and Understand Chemical Labels
- Sanitize all parts of Greenhouse Growing Areas
- Responsibly use Chemical-Dependent PPE (personal protective equipment)
- Execute Work Orders in a timely fashion
- Attend and Pass Moisture Management Training and Forklift/Tractor training
- Responsibly use Chemical-Dependent PPE (personal protective equipment)
- Execute Work Orders in a timely fashion
EQUIPMENT
- Irrigation Booms - operate control box- learn and execute programming, troubleshooting, and maintenance - parts, cleaning/sanitation, hose touch-up, valve function, etc,.
- Perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on Irrigation Equipment: Hoses, Water Breakers (Heads), Drip Lines, Sprinkler Heads, and Wands.
- Calibrate and maintain Injectors - Use/Function.
- Chemical Sprayer - Use/Function, Troubleshooting, and Safety Procedures.
- Learn and Execute safe operation of Floor Sweeper, Power Washer, and Hose-end Applicator/Foamer

Primary Responsibilities and Task:
- Understand irrigation, spraying and fertilizing protocols and provide direction and supervise team members executing these tasks accordingly

- Nutrition Management:
- Supervise internal soil testing laboratory and methods.
- Coordinate the use of outside laboratories.
- Ensure tests are conducted at the frequency directed by the Horticulture team.
- Collect the results of the tests and review them with the growing team to ensure proper action is taken to move the plant’s nutrition back into the center line.
- Supervise applications of fertilizer
- Direct the selection, rate and frequency of fertilizer applications to ensure plant nutrition remains within the center line.
- System operation and maintenance monitoring
- Where applicable, ensure that fertilizer injection systems are properly calibrated.
- Review prill count and calibration reports for the soil mixing lines.
- Review the recipes of the soil mixing systems annually and suggest changes to the Director of Operations, the Production Manager and the Technical Director of Horticulture for approval.
- Ensure that any maintenance requirements for fermentation systems are reported via the approved communication tool and monitor for updates or completion of requests.
- Chemical applications and integrated pest management (IPM):
- Team training and development
- Obtain and maintain a private pesticide applicator's license in the state of operation and ensure that designated growing department personnel do the same within ninety days of hire.
- Ensure that employees are properly trained to operate systems or equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- System management
- Oversee the maintenance of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system to ensure that it includes Cultural, Physical, Biological and Chemical control strategies.
- Oversee the selection of, rate, frequency and application method of all pesticides and biological control agents to ensure pest levels are maintained in order to produce quality plants in a cost-effective manner.
- Notify the Director of Operations and accompany state, federal or MPS-ABC officials when conducting inspections or audits.
- Ensure that herbicides are applied in and around the growing area to prevent weed growth.

- Obtain and ensure that designated growing department personnel maintain a valid Florida Private Pesticide Applicator’s license within ninety days of hire.
- Ensure that all growing department personnel have been trained in and certified by the Human Resources Department utilizing the Costa Farms Moisture Management Training and Certification program.
- Ensure that all growing department personnel have been trained regarding The Worker Protection Standards Act of 1992 to include proper Mixing, Handling and Loading of chemicals.
- Ensure that all supervisors complete required Employee Evaluations as communicated by the Director of Operations and/or the Human Resources department.
- Ensure that all growing department supervisors are correctly trained in and maintain proper FOSA documentation procedures.
- Ensure that all required documentation regarding employee attendance and FOSA are completed as directed by the Director of Operations and/or the Human Resources Department.
- Identify suitable employees to the Director of Operations for further career path development.
- Coordinate with the Production Planning, Data Integrity and Operations teams to review product assemblies for accuracy to ensure that proper cost analysis can be performed as needed.
- Submit Assortment Change requests to the Production Planning and Data Integrity departments for review and implementation.
- Moisture Management:
- Ensure that all growing staff understand and follow the correct time of day and conditions in which to irrigate the crops to avoid disease or fungal infections.
- Assist to irrigate crops in emergency situations such as, holidays, labor shortages, unusual weather, etc.
- Report, and follow up on, any maintenance issues regarding water handling systems to the Maintenance Manager for repair.
- Submit requests for tools, parts or other materials needed for irrigation systems to the Central Purchasing department and the Director of Operations for review.
- Fertigation:
- Direct the proper selection, rate, frequency and application of fertilizers throughout the farm to ensure high quality plants are produced without a waste of resources.
- Ensure that fertilizer injection systems are properly calibrated and that any repairs required are reported to the Maintenance Manager.
- Manage random testing of fertilizer outputs from injection systems to ensure proper calibration and rates are being applied.
- Pest Management:
- Ensure that the appropriate growing department personnel record chemical applications via the SAMII Sprayer Module and that all chemical application records, “Right to Know Centers” and MSDS are accurate and up-to-date in compliance with Federal and State regulations.
- Notify the Director of Operations and accompany state or Federal officials when conducting an inspection on-site.
- Ensure that pest levels are maintained at or below an acceptable level in order to avoid loss of sales or customer dissatisfaction.
- Direct the proper selection, rate, frequency and application of all pesticides throughout the farm to ensure high quality plants are produced in a cost-effective manner.
- Assist with actual applications in emergency situations such as; holidays, labor shortages, etc.
- Direct the proper scouting, reporting, soil testing and graphical tracking of appropriate crops throughout the growing cycle.
- Maintain a financially sound Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system to avoid losses from pests.
- Report, and follow up on, any maintenance issues regarding pesticide application systems to the Maintenance Manager for repair.
- Review and submit requests to the Central Purchasing Department for pesticide products, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) or spraying supplies to be purchased that are not automatically replenished via re-order level (ROL) inventory demand.
- Plant Growth Regulator (PGR) Management:
- Direct the application of Plant Growth Regulators to various crops to ensure a high quality, saleable product that meet customer expectations without wasting resources.
- Assist with actual applications in emergency situations such as; holidays, labor shortages, etc.
- Conduct trials to determine the best rates, intervals and PGR chemicals to be used on various products.
- Supervise the calibration of equipment to ensure that proper rates are being applied to the crops.
- Environmental Management:
- Oversee the programming and/or set-points of all greenhouse environmental control systems to maintain the most efficient growing environment possible without compromising crop timing or quality.
- Oversee the programming, use and maintenance of any supplemental or photoperiod lighting systems.
- Report and follow up on, any defective environmental equipment or structural problems (deflated hoops, holes in walls, vents not sealing properly, etc.) to the Maintenance Manager for repair.
- Miscellaneous Requirements:
- Manage and supervise soil testing laboratory personnel, systems and methods.
- Provide information to and coordinate with the Director of Operations regarding grow times, variety selections, potting media and growing program changes to be incorporated into Costa Farms production systems.
- Acquire additional information and knowledge from industry experts, consultants and representatives to continually improve quality and reduce losses or shrink.
- Coordinate with the Operations Manager or Field Labor Manager to facilitate spreading, pinching, weeding, grooming, moving or any other operation required.
- Report any discrepancies regarding required tasks inclusion and/or timing within product assemblies to the Data Integrity team.
- Space Management Requirements:
- Evaluate space type and quantity required weekly for products to be produced utilizing SAMII Space Planning module.
- Graphically map all farm locations weekly to ensure the proper placement of plant products within the various growing environments and to ensure efficiency regarding placement, spreading/moving, shipping and chemical applications.
- Notify the appropriate growing staff of environmental control changes needed to ensure that crops finish on-time and of high quality.
- Report any discrepancies regarding crop footprints to the Data Integrity team.
