Nursery Team Member/Grower’s Assistant
Job Description
As a Nursery Grower’s Assistant you will work in close coordination with the Nursery Managers to maintain the health of the plants. The successful candidate is consistently reliable and hardworking, good at following procedures, very detailed oriented, methodical, and passionate about plants!
Essential Functions:
- Correctly maintain moisture of all nursery stock/Watering
- Operation of automated irrigation system
- Maintain & repair irrigation systems
- Perform required actions to grow and maintain incoming nursery stock such as:
- Spraying
- Pruning
- Spacing
- Ball Repair
- Potting
- Re-Potting
- Clean and maintain facility
- Safe operation of equipment and vehicles
- Unloading nursery trucks
- Stocking nursery displays
- Provide exceptional customer service
- Loading customers
Required Skills
- Enthusiasm for plants and willingness to learn on the job
- Strong work ethic
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced physically demanding, outdoor environment in all weather conditions
Preferred Experience
- Horticulture
- Growing
- Forklift experience a PLUS
- Experience with spraying/chemical applications
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to hear and speak, use their hands and reach with arms. The employee needs to be able to freely access all areas of the property by standing & walking for entirety of shift, stooping, crawling, climbing, crouching and kneeling and lifting, and/or moving up to 100 pounds if required.

- 40-50 hours per week-Monday thru Sunday 5-6 days per week (3/1-4/15)
- 50-65 hours per week-Monday thru Sunday 6-7 days per week (4/16-7/1)
- 32-45 hours per week-Monday thru Sunday 5 days per week (7/1-11/25)
- 40-60 hours per week-Monday thru Sunday 5-6 days per week (11/26-1/1)
Full availability is required for busy seasons no PTO can be used. During off seasons closing shifts and at least one weekend day are required.

Assistant Grower
Job Starts in February
Objective: - To teach an assistant grower our way of growing and have them able to be fully capable of maintaining designated areas of the growing house under the direction of the head grower. To install, maintain and repair automated watering systems and perform preventative greenhouse maintenance and repairs.
Breakdown of primary job responsibilities:
1. GREENHOUSE
Seed, Transplant, Space, Water, Trim and clean plants while maintaining proper growing environment for optimal plant cultivation and growth. Operate greenhouse machinery including soil machine, seeder, transplanter and fertilizing systems.
2. WATERING SYSTEMS / GREENHOUSE MAINTENANCE
Learn and be proficient in all automated watering systems in the greenhouse to be able to install, operate, maintain and repair as required. Fill fertilizer systems and perform routine checks. Perform routine preventative greenhouse maintenance and repairs.
3. CHEMICAL APPLICATIONS
Learn and be proficient in applying control applications including insecticides, fungicides, plant growth regulators and beneficial. Learn and follow required safety protocols while using chemicals. Document and maintain chemical logs as required.
Knowledge and Understanding:
- Soil Mix’s-What we use and why for individual crops and types
- Controls used, timings, rates, and application – knowing why and when to apply
- Fertilizer – understanding the analysis, rate of application, and frequency
- Temperature/humidity/vent settings for various crops and understanding the impact they have on the crops throughout the entire growing cycle
- Planting and pinching techniques
- Watering and how the amount changes based on weather, stage of growth-Root growth
- Crop timings (how long it takes crops to finish) and why we stagger plantings based on stage of growth and volume needed for the retail--- how to adjust timing using various techniques
Secondary Duties:
- Assist in all aspects of the retail store/greenhouses when needed
- Winter maintenance, organization, and store set up if needed
- Overall customer service and experience
- Understanding general operations to be able to assist in other departments
- Building/Property General Areas: security, maintenance, cleanliness and detailing
- Gaining store wide product/plant knowledge

- 40-50 hours per week-Monday thru Sunday 5-6 days per week (2/1-4/15)
