DISPENSARY NURSE (LPN)

Overview of Position: Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager (RN), Attending Physician and/or Physician Assistant (in the absence of the physician), the Dispensary Nurse is responsible for the safe and efficient dispensing of any medications the Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) may utilize in the treatment of patients - this includes methadone, Suboxone (buprenorphine) and naltrexone. The Dispensary Nurse will also conduct vital sign assessment, tuberculin implanting, and phlebotomy in the clinic setting. He/she will be required to collaborate with members of the behavioral health and medical team in the development and management of the OTP and will operate under the agency’s philosophy, standards of practice, and policies/procedures.
The nature of this position is fast-paced, and can involve stressful situations and conditions.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:
· Warmly greeting each patient entering dispensing area to confirm identity and proper medication using two patient identifiers.
· Performing nursing assessment during each dispensing episode to identify patient alertness and orientation.
· Administering daily medication to patients in accordance with program policy/procedure and medical protocols, including methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone, using the automated dispensing system.
· Referring patients to attending physician for any physical concerns; changes in medication pick up schedules; dose confirmation and/or discontinuation; or tapering of methadone/buprenorphine doses.
· Maintaining daily reports for accountability of daily dispensing activities such as calibration, spillage, compliance, and swapping of inventory.
· Performing tasks such as taking vital signs, phlebotomy, immunizations, glucose finger tests, and various lab collection procedures according to CLIA guidelines, during nursing assessments and evaluations for intakes, patient visits, and annual examinations.
· Ensuring compliance with security standards for the distribution and storage of controlled substances as set forth in the Code of Federal Regulations.
· Ordering, receiving, and stocking medication in accordance with DEA and State regulations (if granted Power of Attorney).
· Maintaining 100% accurate documentation of all nursing activities.
· Maintaining security of dispensing area and inventory, and report any diversion to immediate supervisor.
· Mounting, preparing, cleaning, and disinfecting of methadone pumps.
· Maintaining the integrity of the vault that contains OTP clinic medications by ensuring correct and appropriate tally of medications.
· Providing Narcan kits and nicotine patches to patients as needed.
· Other related duties as determined by supervisor.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
· Licensed and currently registered or otherwise duly authorized to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
· EMR and computer proficiency required.
· A minimum of two (2) years’ experience required.
· Must possess excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
· Ability to maintain a professional demeanor under pressure, and operate with a keen sense of urgency and commitment to quality.
· Ability to work in a fast paced, high volume environment.
· Commitment to patient satisfaction.
· Commitment to cultural diversity and sensitivity.
· Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus.
