We are looking for a 2-5 year associate attorney to do a mix of transactional, litigation, and research and writing. The litigation portion of the job will not require court appearances if you would prefer not to appear in court, but there is plenty of opportunity for in-court time if you want it.
Here's what we are looking for:
If you enjoy having variety in your work, want interesting clients and cases, this may be the right spot for you. We do everything from cannabis litigation and transactions, to the typical commercial litigation and transactions, to family and criminal law. So, one day you may be working on a transaction to purchase a cannabis business and the next a murder case. Our work is not boring!
I hate to speak for others, but I feel safe saying that everyone on our team truly feels like a trusted and valued member of the team.
You are good with a little chaos. We are not your typical law firm. We dress casually, pitch in where needed, yell across the hall to coworkers as a quick means of communicating, don’t have set in stone policies (we like flexibility) for things such as billable hours, PTO, etc.
You treat staff and attorneys alike. We are all on the same team, each performing vital functions.
You don’t mind an appropriately placed f-bomb (and are known to toss a few out here and there)
You like to work collaboratively, are not timid about sharing your opinion, but also willing to learn from others.
You are willing to work hard. Yes we are a laid back office that puts a very high value on “work-life balance,” but we take our work seriously and expect everyone to pull their weight.
You don’t want to have to “market” or bring in business. While we don’t prohibit anyone from bringing in business, it’s not a requirement. No need to join organizations, attend events, etc in the name of marketing. We’ve got that covered.
You don’t want or need to be micromanaged. This applies to when you are in the office/working and your projects. We are generally not morning people so we don’t open the office until 9:30. If you are an early bird, feel free to come in when you like. Bottom line is we don’t care who is here first and who leaves last or what particular time those things occur. We care about the work getting done. As long as that’s happening, you do you. Same idea with your projects.
The person who fills this position will work almost exclusively with Christina Vaughn, Jacki Loney, and Shannon McMurray.
While we can work remotely, we generally work in the office (helps with the team/collaborative atmosphere) and are looking for folks who will want to see our bright, shining faces on most days.

About You
A successful candidate will be knowledgeable about state and federal civil procedure, motion practice, discovery, and trial preparation. You are not expected to know everything or have done everything, but you must understand the process.
You will join a team of partners, associates, paralegals, a secretary, finance manager, an HR manager, and a receptionist. We use a suite of cloud-based software including Office 365, Clio, Logikcull, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other programs as needed for your role.
We are now functioning as a mostly virtual team and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future, though we do have a beautiful office on Market Street at Montgomery in San Francisco. Accordingly, we will consider an applicant who wishes to work from home often, though due to the nature of the work, physical presence in the office may be required from time to time. We practice social distancing when in the office and have a written protocol.

Entry Level/Intermediate Associate Attorney Position

Responsibilities of our Mid-Level Associate include but are not limited to:
- Assist other lawyers in advising clients concerning business transactions, ranging from simple to complex.
- Prepare, draft, and review legal documents, such as merger agreements, operating agreements, and shareholder agreements.

Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate required.

*The Firm
Small yet influential firm specializing in cannabis law and licensing is seeking a new associate attorney to join the team and work on all aspects of client matters. Clientele are primarily family businesses, solopreneurs, women and minority owned businesses, equity applicants, and legacy cannabis operators. The Firm's primary values are integrity, equity, and affordability.
The Role
You will be working directly with clients on a day-to-day basis to advise and drive the process on all legal aspects of their services including state and local cannabis licensing applications, business structuring, business transactions, business operations, and compliance. You will provide pragmatic advice on legal and business decisions and their risks. You will conduct 1-2 hour consultations on general business and cannabis licensing requirements. You will answer questions and provide advice on a wide range of issues including some personal non-business legal matters. You will attend government hearings and present on behalf of clients and their applications.
You will work independently with minimal oversight though you will collaborate closely with our experienced licensing manager and have access to a variety of internal resources. You will regularly refer to and gain expertise in state and local agency websites, statutes, and regulations including unwritten and unofficial procedures. For the position, you must be comfortable communicating with clients, government regulators, and others in adversarial or difficult situations, particularly over the phone. You must be able to communicate and empathize with people from a variety of backgrounds with a range of business experience. You must have the ability to effectively relay complex information in a concise format particularly through email.
The cannabis industry is volatile and nothing is guaranteed thus you must be resilient and motivated in the face of numerous client setbacks. To be successful in the position, you must exercise initiative and creativity in solving challenges and accomplishing client goals and thus must be comfortable challenging the status quo and preconceived notions of what is possible.
The Working Conditions, Compensation, & Benefits
- $70,000/yr approximate annual pay based on billable hours worked
- Approximately 20 hours a week, 15 being billable hours, billable hours expected to increase over time
- This is an employee position, not a contractor, and as such the Firm will contribute to your payroll taxes, social security, medicare, and unemployment
- Work from home. The firm was virtual/mobile prior to Covid and will continue to be so after offices reopen. We have a coworking space available in Oakland if an in-person meeting is absolutely required or if you want to get out of the house.
- No strict work hours and set your own daily schedule. We usually start around 9am and end around 6pm. As long as you stay in communication (via Slack) and meet client needs, you can do what you want with your day. You are not expected to work evenings, weekends, or holidays unless necessary to meet deadlines (which is rare).
- You will never be expected to work with clients that are rude or disrespectful in any way and we will fire them if necessary. Our clients are passionate, appreciative, and unique. While they may be difficult at times, they are good people we enjoy helping. We are not here to work with people that make us miserable just because they pay.

The Minimum Requirements
- Must be a licensed member of the California Bar
- Must have a minimum 3 years of experience as a licensed attorney working in commercial transactions, structuring and forming entities, due diligence, and entity compliance.
- Proven negotiation, drafting, and analytical skills for various types of commercial contracts including partnership agreements, employment agreements, non-disclosure agreements, distribution agreements, licensing agreements, manufacturing agreements, and real estate transactions.
- Must have 1-2 years experience working directly with clients, their partners, and other parties.
- Must have 1 year of experience tracking and reporting billable hours.
- Must have some experience representing and assisting clients at government hearings.
- You must be able to use google and general internet resources to effectively conduct legal research as we do not subscribe to online legal research services.
- Dedication to furthering social justice and principles of equality are also required as these guide the Firm’s actions & values.
Nice to Have:
Cannabis law/regulations/policy, other highly regulated industries, litigation, mergers & acquisitions, Start Up, real estate agent, community organizing, spreadsheet, html, and blogging experience are a plus as well as participation in Bar and industry associations.
The Expectations
Due to the virtual/mobile nature of the firm and independent nature of the position, there are high expectations for resourcefulness and adhering to office policies and procedures. In addition, due to the nature of cannabis laws and clients it is essential that you are able to spot issues arising under the CA Bar's Rules of Professional Conduct and appropriately respond. Other expectations include:
- Prompt and clear communication with other members of the Firm
- Efficiently complete client work as expediently as possible
- Fast & accurate with exquisite attention to detail and excellent grammar, Oxford commas required
- Follow instructions to a T
- Manage a heavy number of clients each with a light to moderate workload
- Exercise sound business and practical judgment with clients
- Respond to client communications in a reasonable amount of time
- Diligently track all billable hours, concisely summarize tasks/services provided, and adhere to time limits

- Maintain professional boundaries within a very congenial office and industry avoiding TMI with staff and clients

Origin Group Law LLP is seeking a part time Associate Attorney to support our busy cannabis-focused law practice in Nevada City, with an office soon in the Emerald Triangle. We are looking for a sharp attorney with a demonstrated aptitude for business and transactional law, who can also work well with a team and utilize their analytical skills in unusual settings. Currently, the position will consist of remote work, but may move into one of our two rural offices when it is safe to do so.
Primary responsibilities:
- Under supervision, Associate Attorney will take an active part in client communications and manage various complex legal and regulatory projects.
- Under supervision, the Associate Attorney will draft and negotiate various business related documents, such as governance documents, purchase/services agreements, employment agreements, and the like.
- The Associate Attorney may be involved in preparing for land use hearings, civil or administrative trials in a support or second-chair capacity. (*Prior litigation experience is helpful but not required.)
- Potential travel throughout Northern California and the Bay Area.
Ideal candidates will have the following skills:
- Ability to comprehend complex matters and identify the laws that are applicable to them.
- Exceptional organization and time management skills.
- Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
- Thorough knowledge of legal procedure and willingness to keep up with an ever shifting legal landscape.
- Proficiency in MS Office, the Google suite, and related programs.
Hourly pay will be on the low end of market rate, but may be renegotiated after some set period of time based on performance. Once you’ve proved yourself, the sky's the limit.

Solo practitioner with 21 years of criminal law experience looking for associate to perform legal writing and research. 70% of cases involve indigent defense in both State and Federal Courts including death penalty work.
On an annual basis, I take on a case involving impact litigation. Examples, challenging the imprisonment of transgender juveniles in adult prisons, challenging the service of federal grand jury subpoenas to juveniles, challenging the right of courts to directly place juveniles in out of state facilities, challenging cannabis prohibition, challenging the right for farmers to grow hemp. Upcoming impact litigation projects will include participation in a nationwide challenge to cannabis prohibition, and challenging the lack of appropriate treatment of persons on the spectrum in state mental hospitals.
Office is located in a farmhouse on a working hemp farm. Desire to learn irrigation and cannabis horticulture a plus.
Working atmosphere is very intellectual and casual dress. Work life balance is valued.
Expected work will be to research, write legal memoranda, briefs, motions, and appeals.
Excellent writing ability. Preference for English and Philosophy majors. Will train on the job for criminal matters.
